A couple of problems with PBEM

The Undo problem is one of the most serious issues for PBEM. I avoid it at any cost while recording a logfile. If I must use “Undo”, I save the logfile, then begin a new log-file while replaying the previous one, this way I’m not hitting Undo while recording.

Why is it such a big issue for PBEM? Because it really does look like you/your opponent is cheating when something goes wrong. I had a really nasty run-in with this problem, my VASL opponent ALWAYS looked like he was cheating. My heavy machine guns would shift around to other locations, squads would disappear etc.

I suggest that until Brent has resolved the problem, we link the Undo button to a dialog box while a log-file is being recorded. So when a user hits the button, it says “WARNING: … we are working on the issue…”

Is anyone with me on this? I’d do the changes myself but Joel still hasn’t merged my changes from 5 months ago.

I remember that while working on RSR, but once all the commands were chained properly the problem was gone (I think).

Thus spake “bsmith”:

The problem you’re referring to here—that hitting Undo while recording
a log looks suspect—won’t be solved by the work Brent’s doing. (He’s
working on getting rid of single actions which are shipped out to the
log as multiple actions.)

My opinion on Undos is that if you’re recording a log and you undo an
action, then both actions in the do-undo pair should be removed from the
log—or, at least this should be a possible setting.

I had forgotten about those. Thanks for the reminder.

Thus spake Joel Uckelman:

I’ve merged your changes from bsmith/3.2-working@5236 now, which add
server totals to the Server Status pane.

Thus spake “bsmith”:

I’m starting to recall why I didn’t merge these straigtaway—I had and
still have various objections to the changes.

First, can you make a case for adding a Close button to a chart window?
I don’t see what use that is, since any reasonable window manager will
give a chart window a close decoration.
