Can't get modules to work

Hello, I am not entirely new at using VASSAL since I have played VASL. However, with the new VASSAL 3.0 version I can’t get anything to work. I have tried downloading Patton’s Best and Axis and Allies Naval Miniatures to play. I have just been highlighting the zip file, but when I try to play I get a message saying that they are not VASSAL modules. How do I fix this? Even when I try to select the exe file within the zip folder, I get a messing saying zip error.

Never mind got it to work

For anybody reading this post wondering what they should do with their ZIP files…

If you download a Module with the .ZIP extension, change the filename from [.ZIP] to [.vmod]

If it’s an Extension, rename it from [.ZIP] to [.vmdx]

VASSAL should recognize the new extensions.

Thus spake “aidendouglass”:

Sometimes modules are themselves zipped. If you just change the extension
without unzipping such modules, you won’t be able to load them.

I guess I just don’t understand why you’d zip a module…

I just tried Zipping a module and it went from 4,578 KB to 4,446 KB.
Hardly seems worth the confusion… I suppose if you were wanting to bundle in something with it?

But, thank you for the clarification!

You might want to zip a module so it can be hosted on websites that do not
accept the vassal extension type

Also, not all users are tech savvy.
Some do not have their extensions turned on or know how to make them visible
for example, so telling them to rename the extension doesn’t help therefore.
Needless to say many expect a zip file to be a zip file that opens in a zip
file manager, a txt to be a txt opening in a text editor etc…

All this file extension renaming just gets us in to trouble instead of
letting the file extension type behave properly so the user knows exactly
what to do with it.

Thus spake “aidendouglass”:

Some module designers have zipped their modules because Macs “helpfully”
unzip ZIP archives for you—which leaves you with a mess when you
download module which isn’t zipped.

A better solution is for our web server to send the right MIME type
for modules so that Macs don’t recognize them as ZIP archives anymore.
That won’t happen before we move to the new site.
