Could not find the main class error

Hi - I’ve used Vassal for years, and all of a sudden got this error, with the subtext “VASSAL.launch.ModuleManager”

I rebooted and reinstalled the latest Vassal, but still get that error. Any idea?

Thanks, Jeff

What error are you getting? You haven’t provide sufficient context for us
to help you.

What version of VASSAL (the version number, not “the latest”)?

What version of Java?

What operating system?

sorry - I’ll be a little more specific

The error message occurs when I attempt to launch Vassal (3.1.4) from the desktop icon. “Could not find the main class: Vassal.launch.ModuleManager”

I have Windows XP.

Again, I’ve used Vassal as recently as 2 days ago without a problem.

Sounds like the installation files got lost or renamed. If so, a re-install ought to clear it up.

Thus spake “jburdett”:

Check the the properties of your VASSAL desktop shortcut. What values
are there for “Target” and “Start in”? Go to the directory where you
have VASSAL installed. Is the file Vengine.jar in the lib subdirectory
of that directory?

OK, I reinstalled Java and Vassal. Works now, but I’m not sure what happened. Thanks!

Thus spake “jburdett”:

We’ve never been able to determine what causes this problem, precisely
because people always reinstall in this situation—which destroys all
of the evidence. Since I took the time to look into your problem, I
would have appreciated it if you’d answered the questions I asked, as
this might have helped others, too. Please consider tech support not
just as solving your problem, but as leaving a record of the causes of
problems for the benefit of other users.
