I am looking to improve the Ambush! module. In addition to adding more of the extension games (an obvious thing to do), I am also thinking to try to improve the basic module. One of the most useful improvements I can think of would be to make it easier to run the campaign mode without having to reenter a lot of information every time you start a new scenario.
Specifically, this would require being able to save, and restore, the information about the squad members.
Is there any way in vassal, short of adding a new class, to allow file access, so that the squad information could be saved to and restored from a file?
I guess, really, the question is: how do I access normal java classes from within Vassal? I couldn’t find anything on how to do this, which is probably due making the right sacrifices when I did my searches…
Or, alternatively: how do I do a partial save of a game in vassal? I’d want to save the state of the squad record map, but not other maps, etc., and then be able to load this saved map when a new game is started without overwriting or clearing the parts that are not save?
Anyway, thanks in advance, and sorry for what is probably a newb question answered somewhere else.
A Deck can - if configured with Can be saved-to/loaded-from a file enabled - be saved and loaded from disk file.
The question is, if you squad member state can be represented as a Deck or Decks in the module Ambush (please remember to give a link to the project in question).
If you cannot, then it depends a lot on how you represent the state of squads. If the state is stored on some map via counters, then could do a regular save - with all counters removed from the main playing surface. However, that will select specific boards, so may one would need to edit the save so that the boards are not specified.
Perhaps you can give a bit more information about how the squad states are represented in the module?
I’m just starting, so how the squad is stored is entirely up to me. I strongly suspect I can do it as a deck, so that would be perfect; thanks for the pointer! The current module is here: Ambush - Module Library - Vassal . The squad record is a map, simply a scanned sheet, with absolutely nothing on it, not even an way of filling it out. So, yeah, I think a deck or decks will be the way to go. I’ll look at now.
