Frustrated!

Guys n Gals, I cannot get vassal to work. It was working but with errors, so I tried to update. Whenever I try to initialize a window pops up with nothing but the background of whats underneath in the frame… When I minimize I can briefly see part of the interface options but I cant get it to work. I just updated my java to 6.12 and tried to update my engine and now its not working at all. What version of java do I need to be running for it to work? The mod I’m trying to use is vassal40k, but I cant even get to the point where i can choose the desired application. Plz help!

Thus spake “Calliope”:

You already have the right version of Java. What version of VASSAL did you
install?

I tried to install the latest then had to regress to 3.0. Now its working again with java 5.09. Cant seem to get anything to work together in any other versions than those. Got any ideas?

Thus spake “Calliope”:

In order to help you, we need you to answer the following questions:

  • What operating system are you using?

  • Which VASSAL bundle did you install?

I’m encountering a similar problem. I’ve downloaded the latest version of Java 6.0 and downloaded the newest version of VASSAL 3.1.4 for windows. The program refuses to open.

However when I earlier downloaded the 3.1.3 version for windows, the program opened up just fine except I got the bug error. Thus I was forced to attempt to download the 3.1.4 version for windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thus spake “ricomaurer”:

In order to help you, I need more details. Which update of Java 6 do you
have? What error are you seing?

I have Java version 1.6.0_03. My problem is nothing is happening when I click on the VASSAL icon. The opening box doesn’t come up.

However, when I downloaded the 3.1.3 version, the opening box came up and asked me about the walkthrough or go straight into the program. Then, the problem with the system bug came up and I was forced to download the newer version.

Thus spake “ricomaurer”:

This is probably unrelated, but you have a somewhat old version of Java.
I recommend updating to the current version, which is 1.6.0_13.

I need you to answer all of the following questions:

  1. Which VASSAL 3.1.4 bundle did you install? (Show me where you got it.)

  2. What did you do to install it? (Did you select a Custom or Standard
    install?)

  3. Go to Start > Run, and type ‘cmd’. This will get you a terminal window.
Type ‘cd C:\Program Files\VASSAL’. What happens?

What system bug? Please describe it. What happens? What error message
is there?

I got the new download from this site:

http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=vassalengine&filename=VASSAL-3.1.4-windows.exe&use_mirror=superb-east

I did the standard install for VASSAL and when I type in the command in DOS, I am told that C:\Program is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or file.

It say anything about what was causing the bug. It just said there was a system bug and that I needed to upload the newest version. It lead me to the website at sourceforge to update vassal.

Thus spake “ricomaurer”:

The error you’re seeing in the Windows shell has nothing to do with VASSAL.
It’s because the directory name you’re typing “C:\Program Files”, has a
space in it, and so must be surrounded by quotes when typed in the shell.
I forgot to include the quotes in my instructions above. It should be:

cd “C:\Program Files\VASSAL”

Once you’ve done that show me what’s in the directory by typing “dir”.

If you see a file called VASSAL.exe, then type “VASSAL” in the shell
and tell me what happens.

uckelman you have the patience of a saint. Good luck.

Still, the same thing “not an external command, operable program, or file batch.” Does it mean anything that the part to the left says “C:\documents and settings”?

Thus spake “ricomaurer”:

You have to be more explicit when you reply, otherwise I can’t tell what
you’re doing. After typing which command did you get that message?

Thus spake “ricomaurer”:

I think I figured out what you’re doing wrong: You are not supposed to type
the single quotes around ‘cd C:\Program Files\VASSAL’. Those are there to
make clear what the extent of the command is when it appears in a sentence.
What you are supposed to type is this:

cd C:\Program Files\VASSAL
