Guy with invisible nick

For some time now, on vassal40k, a guy has been running around with an invisible nick.

He will still show up in the room count(sometimes you see a game room with 1 person in it, but when you expand the name list of that game room, no names appear at all), but his nick is COMPLETELY invisible, does not appear in the name list AT ALL, cannot be seen, cannot be selected. If he types anything, the chat window will show < > [insert chat text here]. He uses the invisible nick to go into game rooms un-noticed and then kills everything on the board, spams terrain, etc, etc, and he cannot be kicekd.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Yes, simple fix for next release of Vassal. Should have let us know earlier. I will make players with no nickname display as (Anonymous).

Thus spake “Question”:

This is fixed in 3.1.10-svn5945, which you can get here:

nomic.net/~uckelman/tmp/vassal/

Give this a try and let us know if this solves the problem.

Not fixed, invisible nick still showing as invisible.

Could you show me what appears in the Server Room display please.

You should find that the in the Server Room display, the person now appears as
‘(Anonymous)’ and can be kicked from the room. This solves the original problem.

I’m not sure there is any point in changing what appears in the Chat Window.

I think we should change the Chat Window to match the Room display, if
for no other reason than for UI consistency.

Is “Anonymous” something which can or should be i18n’d?

If you guys are talking about the server status window, invisible nick still doesnt show in there.

Please show me a screenshot of the server status window showing this happening.

Thks,

Kinda hard to do when wacky, the guy using the invisible nick running around ruining games, is not available on call to test this.

He still had a invisible nick earlier, but i forgot to take a screenshot.

On the other hand, i just tested it and leaving the name space blank would give me the anonmyous nick…but…

If you put a space in it you will end up with an (almost) invisible nick.

But thats not how wacky does it, putting a space would leave you selectable and people can still see you in the player list. His invisible nick is completely unselectable.

What version of Vassal are you using?

I was using 3.1.10. How did you re-produce it?

Hi Joel,

swampwallaby-3.1@5984 has the i18n of Anonymous and also fixes the invisible nick problem properly. My last fix did not work in all cases.

Thanks for i18n’ing that. Is this a fix which needs to be applied
to the game server as well?
