Help with creating a module.

I’m looking to create Dominion. I have all the card graphics but I’m a little lost on how to start creating the module. Do I need multiple copies of the same card jpg or will one do? How do I create a deck of cards in Vassal? The online manual is not really much help.

You only need one copy of each graphic.

The best way I’ve found to learn about creating a specific aspect of a module was to open someone elses module and see how they did it. I find VASSAL extremely easy to learn just by looking at other people’s work.

I’ve only done one module with cards (Eastern Front Tank Leader), but I found it pretty straight forward and easy.

Rich.

There are two places to look for information.
One is the set of tutorials at vassalengine.org
The other is the reference manual that you get from the Vassal
application under the “Help” menu.

Were you able to follow the steps in the tutorial at
vassalengine.org/wiki/doku.php?id=card_game

If not, what were the parts where you got lost? What might help to
make this a more useful tutorial?

I think this was written for a older version of vassal. There are things mentioned that aren’t in the same place or just don’t exist. For example I’m trying to create a player’s hand window and it mentioned fields that just don’t match up to what I see.

Ok I got the first card in the module. But it’s too big. Basically what size of a gameboard should I use and what size cards and how big should my image files be? I will enough room for 18 piles in the play area (the 3 piles of money and victory cards and a trash pile and a curse pile and then 10 piles for the action cards)

Size is arbitrary to what you find “readable”
You can control gameboard by setting the zoom factor and use a Mouse over
stack viewer for magnification to “x” of components. This way your board can
be any size you want

Can I send you what I have so far (not much) and then you can make fun of me er I mean give me suggestions?

Yes.

Here ya go! Thanks for all the help guys!

Try that again

http://www.mediafire.com/?dyiddzmmvhy

Here you go
mediafire.com/file/mqrnnnnmy … assal.vmod

The map area is 1200 X 1600. Zoom is set initial to 0.5x

Make the cards 250 X 383 pixels, smaller but still readable

As you will see Ive created the 18 decks (with names) for you and placed
them on the board. Ive added a grid as a area guide you can switch off.

This should get you going

Tim

Thank you!

Ok I change the image used in one of the card piles and it’s now too big. How do I shrink that?

You need to edit it (scale image size) with a graphic program such as
Photoshop, Gimp, Fireworks etc…

Ah so you took the one in the module I sent and shrunk it? So the actuall JPG needs to be 250x383?

Yup ok I figured that out  continuing to work on it!

I’m glad you were able to get the help from Tim.

But to better help other new users, can you give some comments about
what is missing from the card game tutorial that you needed to know?
That would help us improve the instructions for everyone starting to
use Vassal.

Thanks.

Just took a quick look at that. I did notice the using of “clone” to make multiple copies of cards. Didn’t this go away and now is copy/paste? That is the only thing I saw which might confuse someone new trying to build a deck from it

Hey I think what might help is picture by picture step by step tutorial. Also is it me or did the images you used not match up to the most current version?

Ok in this game you choose 10 out of 25 decks of action cards. I need to make a seperate tray to keep them in? Also each player will need his own deck which cards selected from the piles are added to. What would be the best way to do this?
