How do you get this to run?

I’ve tried running VASSAL on both my laptop and desktop and it won’t run. It just appears that nothing happens. I downloaded and installed the latest JRE but nothing different happened. Any help appreciated.

Karl

I saw some other posts about installing 3.1 beta and that seems to be working for me.

Thus spake “kombat”:

What version of VASSAL are you trying to run?

On what OS are you trying to run it?

Hi,

I have the same problem.
I installed and got it to run once.
I loaded the Ardennes’44 (v1.2) module and it worked.
After shutting it down I couldn’t get it to run again.
I reinstalled Vassalenging 3.1.0 and Java 6u12, but to no avail.

I used Vassalengine 3.1.0, running Vista x64 OS, 8GB RAM, and Java 6 update 12.

Further, I tried running Vassalengine 2.9 and 3.0 but I couldn’t get any of them to work as I got an error message trying to run the .bat-file.
(Errormsg: Windows cannot find ‘javaw’. make sure you typed the name correctly, and try again."

Anyone know what may be the problem?

Thus spake “gustmic”:

Which package did you install? Can you point me to it?

For vassalengine 3.1.0
vassalengine.org/releases/VA … indows.exe

For vassalengine 3.0
vassalengine.org/install/VASSAL-3.0.zip

For vassalengine 2.9
vassalengine.org/install/VASSAL-2.9.zip

For module Ardennes’44 module v1.22
vassalengine.org/community/i … le_id=3905

Thus spake “gustmic”:

Ok, that’s what you should have installed.

  1. What are you doing to start VASSAL?

  2. What do you see when you start VASSAL?

After I installed it, I ran it from the Installer. It ran fine and I opened the downloaded module for the Ardennes’44. Great.

After exiting the program I, a bit later, tried opening the program again.
I did this using desktop shortcut, Start menu shortcut, and even the .exe file directly at directory level. I even tried running it as Administrator. Nothing.

I reinstalled it as previously mentioned. Nothing.
I wasn’t able to run the 2.9 or 3.0 version due to failure to open the bat-file. On my XP-machine, the bat-file opened however. And the vassalengine works. But not on my Vista machine.

As to your question 2 - I pretty much see nothing. The program seems to be opening for less than half-a-sec as I can see the Vista-circle instead of the pointer, but then it turns into the pointer again. Then nothing.

The Vassalengine doesn’t seem to be running in the background either after having checked Windows Task Manager, at least not as an application.

Thanks for taking your time to help me. I really appreciate it.

Thus spake “gustmic”:

Try running the .exe file from the Windows shell. (To get a shell, go to
Start > Run and type “cmd”. You’ll then need to cd to the directory where
VASSAL.exe is.)

When you do that, is there any output in the shell window?

After having entered the directory, I typed “VASSAL.exe” without the quotation marks as well as “VASSAL”.
It’s been a while since I was playing in DOS-mode.
However, there is no output what so ever.
It just gives me a new promt: "C:\Program Files (x86)\VASSAL>

Thus spake “gustmic”:

Can you run VASSAL again after rebooting?

Nope. Sadly still the same, i.e. nothing happens.

Thus spake “gustmic”:

Ok, so that rules out my theory that there was a zombie Module Manager
process still running, blocking you from starting another.

the following:

javaw -client -cp lib/Vengine.jar VASSAL.launch.ModuleManager

What happens when you do that?

I get the following:
‘javaw’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

Thus spake “gustmic”:

We’ve found your problem.

javaw is the executable which runs Java programs, and it’s not on your PATH,
which means that the VASSAL launcher can’t find it. Normally, this would be
setup when you install Java, so something got messed up. The most expedient
way to get this setup correctly will be to reinstall Java.

Well, the funny thing is that I completely removed all Java as well as VASSAL. then I reinstalled them both.
I’ll give it a shot once more and we’ll see, maybe I missed something.

BTW, all the Java required is JAVA™ 6 Update 12, right?

Thus spake “gustmic”:

The minimum version of Java which will work properly is 5 update 8 (a.k.a.,
1.5.0_08). The recommended version for Windows is the current one, which is
6 update 12 (a.k.a. 1.6.0_12).

If this doesn’t work for you after reinstalling, then there might be
something weird going with file locations because you’re running 64-bit
Windows. In any case, I think we’re pretty close to success now.

I think I got it.
I reinstalled Java first, but this time I rebooted the computer after the Java installment.
After that I installed VASSAL.
I ran VASSAL and it worked. I closed the application and, and contrary to before, this time the application once again ran as it should.
To make sure, I rebooted once again, and after that tried to open up the application, and yes, it did work. So, it seems as if it solved the problem.
Maybe the rebooting after Java did it.

Thanks for all the help.
If something goes wrong again I’ll know where to turn.
Thanks again!

Thus spake “gustmic”:

That’s… weird. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Java dozens of times* on
32-bit Windows XP and I’ve never seen that happen. Maybe needing to reboot
is something peculiar to 64-bit Windows, or to Vista (or to both together),
but so far as I know it’s not supposed to require a reboot to work. I’d be
interested to know if this is happening to anyone else.

*I’ve reinstalled Java many times not because Java was broken, but because
I was testing the part of our Windows installer which checks whether you
have Java and if not, downloads and installs it for you.

I’m glad we were able to get that sorted.

Have fun!

Sad to say, but the problem still isn’t resolved.
It seems as only sometimes I am able to open VASSAL and sometimes it just won’t start up. Sometimes when I have rebooted it works, but sometimes that doesn’t even work. Hmm…

Is there a way we could troubleshoot this?

Thanks,
gustmic
