Install problem

This is a new one on me. Here is what I did and what happened.

  • Downloaded the Vassal file “VASSAL-3.2.15-windows”.
  • opened the file and the Install Wizard appeared and hit next to continue.
  • selected the “Standard” install option and let it do it’s thing.
  • I ran Vassal at the end of the install when it asked if I wanted to and it loaded just fine.
  • After I downloaded a mod from the website, I went to boot Vassal back up so I can add the game to play. But the problem is, I could not find an icon to boot it up from anywhere. Not on the desktop, quick launch bar or the startup menu.
  • Explorer could not find any Vassal directory anywhere.
  • I re-installed the Vassal install file only this time I chose the “Custom” choice so I could see where it was going to be installed. It wanted to put it in a Vassal directory inside the “Program Files” like I expected. I chose the “Browse” option to add it somewhere I knew where I could find it (C:Games/Vassal). As I was browsing around, I noticed that the original Vassal directory kept appearing in the browse window at “C:Program file/Vassal_3.2.15”.
  • The only way I can run the game because even a search will not locate the files, is to install the game and run it at the end of the install.

Any ideas or questions?

Thanks

Look in the directory VASSAL-3.2.15

There should be a program titled VASSAL.exe

Create a shortcut to this file and put the shortcut on the Desktop

Double click the shortcut and Vassal should open.

That is the problem, there is no directory named “Vassal_3.2.15” at all. The install runs like it should and says it is successful but it does not leave any form of file or directory that I can find. Nothing to launch.

In case it helps, I am running Win 7.
I just did a HDD replacement and the Vassal software ran fine on the drive that went bad (well, until it went bad)

Can you search the whole C drive for ‘Vassal.exe’? Maybe the installer ‘misplaced’ the sub-directory.

Also, look in your Recycle Bin. It may be in there.

If not, try to install Vassal again from the installer.

Searching the C: drive only finds the install file I downloaded.

Nothing in the recycling bin.

Did the install three times so far with the last two times using the “Custom” install options to see where it was installing to. Still has a successful install but cannot find the files or directory.

You can use RegEdit to find the install directory. Be careful though. You can really screw up your system if you delete anything necessary in the Registry.

Open RegEdit and Select ‘Edit’ and then ‘Find’ and type ‘Vassal’ in the box. It should take about 4 or 5 ‘Next’ tries to get to the install directory.

I am assuming that you have Administrator rights on your computer.

A search in REGEDIT like you suggested and it only found the download file that I used to install Vassal with.

What a weird problem, I have been building and using computers for 30 years and never had an issue like this from a program that has never given me an issue before.

With a Standard install, you should get a desktop icon, an entry in
your Start menu, and an icon in the quick start bar.

With a Custom install, you’re presented with a check box for each of
these.

Did you see any of them appear when the install was finished but before
you launched VASSAL for the first time?

  • Explorer could not find any Vassal directory anywhere.

A Standard install will put 3.2.15 into C:\Program Files\VASSAL-3.2.15.
Check the install log at the end of the install to verify that. Note
that there’s a hyphen, not an underscore, in that path.

I just ran the installer again and watched the progress. Here are a few of the important lines lines.

Output folder: C:\Program Files\VASSAL-3.2.15 (4th line from top)

The last few lines mention creating the shortcuts for all three desktop, Start Menu and the quick launch bar.

and the last line says
“Completed”

Still no folders where it should be and no icons to launch from any of the three areas you run programs from.

What you’ve said about how the install runs suggests that it succeeded.

I suspect that you’re having a permissions problem. Maybe your user
account isn’t able to see the directory into which VASSAL is intalled?
Try loggin in with an account having admin rights and look for
C:\Program Files\VASSAL-3.2.15 then.

I’m having the same issue, any fix yet? I went ahead and tried to install version 3.3.1 thinking it was an update issue, but the wizard detected that the game was installed even though I still can’t find the game folder with windows explorer. i installed 3.3.1 and there was still no shortcuts or game directory.
