Mac users on Catalina (MacOS 10.13) [reported](https://forum.vassalengine.org/t/cant-upgrade-vassal-on-macos/79553) being unable to install Vassal beyond 3.7.9.

From those reports the following solution emerged:

> [@Can't upgrade VASSAL on MacOS](https://forum.vassalengine.org/t/cant-upgrade-vassal-on-macos/79553/58):
>
> For anyone who wants to run the current Vassal MacOS package on a version of MacOS which doesn’t support Java 21 or newer, the solution is to replace the bundled Java with Java 17.

Step by step (replacing “3.7.12” in steps 5 & 6 with the version of Vassal that you install):

> [@Can't upgrade VASSAL on MacOS](https://forum.vassalengine.org/t/cant-upgrade-vassal-on-macos/79553/60):
>
> 1. Download the [MacOS release](https://github.com/vassalengine/vassal/releases/download/3.7.12/VASSAL-3.7.12-macos-universal.dmg).
> 2. Install it.
> 3. Download [Java 17](https://adoptium.net/temurin/releases/?version=17&os=mac).
> 4. Install it.
> 5. Delete `/Applications/VASSAL 3.7.12.app/Contents/MacOS/jre`.
> 6. Move `/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/temurin-17.jdk/Contents/Home` to `/Applications/VASSAL 3.7.12.app/Contents/MacOS/jre`.

Note, you will need to repeat this process whenever you update Vassal.
