Jabber server

Joel,

Is the Jabber server down on test.nomic.net:5222? I can’t connect.

Thanks,
Brent.

No, it’s not running right now. I shut it off because the original one
worked so poorly. I’ll get a new one up on Sunday for you.

Thanks.

Also…

There is a service or page set up at:

vassalengine.org/util/getServerImpl

that returns a set if properties:

type = node
nodeHost = test.nomic.net
nodePort = 5050

I need another one setup at

vassalengine.org/util/getJabberServerImpl

that returns

type = jabber
nodeHost = test.nomic.net
nodePort = 5222

Thanks,
Brent.

There’s a jabberd server listening on 5222 now and you should find the
file you needed at the requested URL.

I haven’t been able to test the XMPP server other than to see that it is
in fact running, that there are no error messages in the logs, and that
port 5222 is open. Let me know whether this works.

Joel,

I’m having a couple of problems:

  1. In-band account registration needs to be turned on, it is currently off.

  2. Have you installed jabberd14 or jabberd2? jabberd2 needs an additional component mu-conference installed to provide Multi-User Chat(MUC) support.

I installed and tested a number of Jabber servers on my windows system and found the following:

Openfire - Installed easiest, best administration tool, very easy to use, MUC included.
ejabberd - Installed ok, Web admin tool usable, MUC included.
jabberd2 - Installed with effort, no admin tool at all, no MUC included.

I know you don’t like Openfire, but I would much prefer we use ejabberd over jabberd2.

Cheers,
Brent.

Thus spake “Brent Easton”:

It’s jabberd2.

My reason for choosing ejabberd over jabberd2 was that jabberd2 is written
in C, which is a language I know, while ejabberd is written in Erlang, which
I don’t know. In the event that we need to do some debugging, or modify or
write a module, I could do it with jabberd2. But the chances we’ll need to do
that might be low enough that the web interface of ejabberd is more important.

I’ll set up ejabberd this evening.

Ok, ejabberd is installed. I have no clue if I have it set up properly,
though. (I know I don’t, in at least one respect, namely that I don’t
have SSL encrypted connections setup right now. When we go live, we
should be using SSL; otherwise passwords are being sent in the clear.)

I tested the ability to register in-band and it worked for me.

I don’t see the utility of the web admin tool—there’s nothing there
which can’t be set from the config files.

That’s so unix of you Joel ;)

Two reasons:

  1. It allows me to configure it without having to play with config files.

  2. It displays the current status including rooms created, users logged in, permissions etc. Essential info for debugging.

What’s the admin login and password?

Heh. I must sound like a crotchety old guy sometimes…

I think the info displayed was not so interesting when I was the sole user
logged in.

There isn’t a unique one. You can assign admin rights to as many user accounts
as you want. Tell me your username and I’ll set you up.
