Layers - Shortcut button to switch between

Just getting to grips with layers and I’m using them to create two-step pieces in order to record step losses in a wargame. It works fine, but I can’t see how to change the shortcut, which appears as ‘CTRL F4’ when I command-click the piece (on a Mac).

I have ‘always active’ and ‘loop through levels’ ticked on the layer properties window. I removed the original shortcuts (CTRL-[ and CTRL-]) because they are already being used for piece rotation.

Any help would be gratefully received.

I don’t understand your problem.

The current shortcut is CTRL F4? And you want to change it to what? How did you change it to CTRL F4 in the first place and what are you doing differently now?

Thanks for looking mkiefte.

I want to change it to CTRL-s. I didn’t change it to CTRL-F4 though, I don’t know how that got there.

At the moment the only way I can execute a step loss is to command-click the piece and select from the resulting menu, which lists my step loss option (Hit/Rally) but won’t allow the shortcut I set on the Layer window (CTRL-s).

Will it allow anything else besides CTRL-S?

No I can’t get it to recognise anything as a layer shortcut, but all the other shortcuts are working fine.

For more detail, in the layer window I have Always Acive and Loop Through Levels checked. Of the three lines in the middle of the window broken by the word ‘key:’ the uppermost is inaccessible (because I have Always Active checked), the middle one is where I have “Hit/Rally - key: - CTRL - s”, and the lower of the three is blank. I also deleted the information in the Reset to Level row. Nothing else is checked.

Note I am using a Mac ibook G4 running OSX 10.4.11.

This seems to work fine for me. Also, what version of VASSAL are you using?

I’m using 3.0.17.

Okay, that should have been the first question I asked. What you should do is download the latest available version:

For Windows: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/vassalengine/VASSAL-3.1.0-beta7-windows.exe
For Mac OS X: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/vassalengine/VASSAL-3.1.0-beta7-macosx.dmg
For Linux (and other platforms): http://downloads.sourceforge.net/vassalengine/VASSAL-3.1.0-beta7-generic.zip
Source code: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/vassalengine/VASSAL-3.1.0-beta7-src.zip

If the problem still persists, post the module so I can download it.

Simple solution - you need to use capital letters to define shortcut keys… I was using lower case. Simple as that. All is well now, but I couldn’t find that explained anywhere in the manual. Apologies for wasting everyone’s time if in fact it is there somewhere.

Don

Thanks for the update.

It is a bug. It is confusing in that to get ‘s’, you need to put in ‘S’, and to get ‘S’, you need to put in ‘Shift-S’.

The configurer needs to handle the difference internally.

I have updated the bug report, but this section of the code will be redone withe the introduction of Name hotkeys.

Thanks,
B.
