Uninstalling and reinstalling VASSAL won’t help with this problem
because the problem is not with VASSAL. The problem you’re having is
that Java’s registry entries are corrupted. The way to solve that is
to reinstall Java.

Thanks for the help. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Java 7 and the
error continues.

The Java installer is likely not removing/correcting the corrupted
registry entry. Check Add/Remove Programs. What versions of Java do
you see there?

I did see a note somewhere that Java 7 doesn’t work
right with laptop versions of Windows 8.1 though. Does anyone know if
that is true?

I’ve heard nothing about that.
