Thus spake Joel Uckelman:
How about if the Standard install omits the version number, but the
Custom install uses it for shortcuts? If you’re doing a Custom install,
there’s a good chance you’re doing it in order to have multiple versions,
and so you don’t want the shortcuts for other versions to be clobbered.
I’ve made that change here:
nomic.net/~uckelman/tmp/vass … indows.exe

Perfect. I wouldn’t even worry if “custom” installed Linux; Only experienced users will have the courage to click that button, so I’m happy!
And if a user comes back to us complaining that the custom install wrecked Vassal, we can always say “well, that’s for experienced users only”. To which he will reply “but an older module would not run with new Vassal”. Then we say “please talk to the module creator and get him to fix his module”. Problem solved, we’ve just cut our user-support worries by over 50%!
Thus spake “bsmith”:
Hey, that’s a good idea. I’ll have to add a “Wouldn’t you rather use Linux?”
checkbox.

If the installer makes a mess, I’m going to be pissed off—getting this
to work was quite a slog. Anyway, I’ve done the install-uninstall dance
so many times in the past week that I’m convinced it’s solid.
