Offset Squares, MegaHexes, and Dot Only grids?

It doesn’t seem that you can do any of these right now - but they should be pretty easy to implement.

The display of any particular unusual grid can be achieved by merging the grid onto the Map image. In fact, this is more efficient as Vassal does not have to continually calculate and redraw the visible grid.

The snapping of an Offset Square grid is equivalent to an appropriately sized hex grid.

I don’t know what a MegaHex is.

Yes, It looks like the centre Dots of a grid cannot be displayed independently of the grid. There is no particular reason for this.

Haha, I’m curious as hell to know what a MegaHex is, especially given the capitalisation. Whatever it is, I’m guessing it’s better than a normal hexagon. Maybe it has 6.5 sides!

A megahex is a hex made up of smaller hexes (a large hex grid superimposed on a smaller one). Very handy for games with area effects or where you have to count long distances.

I know you can do offset squares just by using an invisible hex grid and drawing the squares on your map image - but it would be incredibly handy to have it in the program and be able to fine tune it (for original designs, of course) so I was hoping it would be added sometime.

And allowing just dots to be displayed would also be very nice for a minimalist approach.

All three of these are used in naval wargames - and I just happen to be working on some ideas for those right now (actually modules suitable for use with miniatures rules).

Have you looked at Map Shadings and the ‘Area of Effect’? These allow you to do things like have a counter display a semi-transparent shading out to a given number of hexes.

You can make a grid of dots by adding a Map Shading to the Map Window, in which you tile the map with a transparent image the size of a grid space with a dot in the center.

The real issue with adding support for such megahexes is that you
effectively need an additional grid on the map in order to allow
reporting based on the megahexes. So that may be a bit tricky to
