online play with unpublished modules - possible?

Is it possible for two players to play online VASSAL real-time using a module that both players have an identical copy of but is not, and can not be, a published module?

If the modules are identical, I don’t see a problem.

possible yes, but is it advisable?

If Vassal policy is to comply with property owners wishes and remove modules that are not allowed from the Vassal website, shouldn’t this further extend to the server to keep Vassal in the clear from possible repurcussions?

We cant police the Vassal server, but we dont want Vassal to get in trouble either.
Lets say “Tiddlywinks.vmod” is asked to be removed by the owners of Tiddlywinks and it is removed from website, but 3 - 6 months later on “Tiddlywinks.vmod” shows up on the server list and is being played regularily by lots of people and the owners of Tiddlywinks see this. What happens next? Vassal complied by removing the mod, but the Tiddlywinks owners won’t care and are going to say it’s still on Vassal’s server though so Vassal is still liable for what goes on in it’s area of control - could get ugly.

For now the easiest work around is to rename in editor Tiddlywinks.vmod to Tiddlywonk or some such so that none involved Vassal/Owners are the wiser to what they see listed on the server, still underhanded somewhat to those that know however…

Just seems like a murky area of policy to me is all. Maybe it should be clarified

Thus spake Timothy Mccarron:

There should be no problem whatsoever with this. The modules themselves
never pass through the game server—the sole thing being “distributed”
this way is the name of the module.

Furthermore, since you can name a module anything you want, seeing the
FooBarBaz module in the connection history is not conclusive evidence that
any module for the FooBarBaz game was ever being played.
