Online Tutor for hex and counter war games

Hi. Is there anybody that does private tutorials on hex and counter war games through Vassal. Im only a beginner and need help and guidance.

My interest is WW2 and really interested in Battle of the Bulge or Eastern Front games. Im in euro timezone.

you don”t need tutoring, you just need to get beat a bunch of times and then you will get better lol

True, but perhaps we can give @Niall a bit more to get started on :slight_smile:

So here’s my suggestion

  1. Start with a relatively simple game. For example Battle for Moscow.
    The linked module is by me - shameless self-plug. But that’s not the main reason.

    • The game is a simple introductory game which is quickly understood.
    • The game is set in WWII on the Eastern Front.
    • The rules, as well as a Print’n’Play PDF are available so that a physical game an easily be set-up.
    • There’s some videos out there to look at.
    • The module contains a tutorial

  2. Then, read the rules of the game through. In the above module, you can find the rules, as a printable PDF, in the Help menu of the game. Battle for Moscow was designed as an introductory game and the rules are therefore pretty straight forward and easily read. But do make sure to read them - otherwise, things may not make sense at all.

  3. Then, load up the module in Vassal and when prompted select to go through the tutorial. Press Page-Down to step forward in the tutorial

    • You can also find a video of the tutorial - be sure to play it in the highest resolution, and possibly at half - or lower - speed.

  4. Now try to play the game through yourself - either using a physical copy or Vassal. If you are in doubt of something, check the rules.

    • If you still cannot find the answer, then check the games BoardGameGeek (BGG) forum - there you will often find answers to your questions.
    • If you do not find the answer, consider making a post in the BGG forum asking your question.

  5. Once you are relatively comfortable with that game - either playing solitaire (you play both factions) or with a friend, you can start to look at other and possibly more complicated games. Here’s a list of some introductory games I’ve made Vassal modules for - more shameless self-plugs - in roughly increasing order of complexity:

    Most of these modules contain a tutorial, some with videos of that. All of them has the rules in them too, and most are fairly automatised to help with book-keeping, combat resolution, and so on.

Playing hex and counter games. I’ve started with the recommended Napoleon at Waterloo at Battle for Moscow and moved on to Celles bulge game but feel im missing something. Like I’ve hit a brick wall.
