Problems with 3.1.3

For some reason when I run or try to run 3.1.3 I am getting memory error problems. The error tells me that I need to reduce the maximum settings in my preferences (which I never set to begin with) and when I load a saved game in mod that ran fine before it tells me it’s out of memory and I need to increase it in my preferences. Major Bomb guys

Thus spake “prodgers”:

This problem is already fixed in the release candidate for 3.1.4, which you
can get here (choose svn5499 or later):

nomic.net/~uckelman/tmp/vassal/

Otherwise, in a few days 3.1.4 will be released and you can install that
to fix the problem.

Ok The game will load but it still says ‘Maximum Heap size too large’ What does that mean? What should it be?

By the way I can seem to Launch VASL 5.anything I don’t know if it’s related or not as I haven’t played it in a long time

Thus spake “prodgers”:

The heap is the memory used by VASSAL. The maximum heap size is the limit
on how much memory VASSAL will use. If you’re seeing this message, than
you’ve set this limit to higher than your machine can handle.

To what do you have the maximum heap size set now? How much RAM do you
have?

I have 512Mb of RAM and the max heap is in fact set to 512

Thus spake “prodgers”:

That’s too high for your machine. If you set the max heap to the same
as the amount of RAM you have, then you’re telling VASSAL that it can
use all of your RAM—including the RAM that your operating system
needs itself in order to work well.

With 512MB RAM, I would try about 300MB for my max heap, and also I’d
turn on memory-mapped images in order to conserve RAM. (The preference
for that is on the “General” tab in Preferences.)

What are suggested VASSAL and Java settings if you have a fast processor and all the memory you could ever want (say 6 or 12 gigs)? Is there something you can do with the available settings to crank the performance?

(how do you have your Fedora system set up Joel?)

Thus spake “IrishBouzouki”:

I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a module which could fill a 2GB heap,
unless you started scaling to a lot of user-defined zoom levels and scrolling
around the whole map.

I generally run with my max heap set to 512MB, as you don’t need more than
that for most modules. (I also have only 2GB RAM, and my video card is a
shared memory one, so it steals about 256MB of that.)
