Should we rename the "generic" bundle?

Totally true. Calling it ‘Linux’ will probably result in the least confusion overall.

I was out of town this weekend. I’ll get the links to the new version up ASAP.

It’s just good practice to keep older versions of the software available on an archive page. But I’ll just link to the existing manual installation Zip files and not bother creating installers for them.

Per our past policy of supporting the next-to-most-recent release of Mac OS, we can think about using Java 1.6 after OS 10.6 comes out. But let’s discuss what advantage we would gain by becoming dependent on 1.6 and whether it’s worth the risk of alienating those Mac users we’d be leaving behind.

I’m going to put an archive of everything we’ve released on the new site,
but in a place where no one will accidentally end up installing anything
old.

Thanks.

BTW, here’s the new Downloads page I created today:

test.nomic.net/download.php

Comments welcome.

Am I missing any releases you think should be here?

test.nomic.net/releases/

This was everything I was able to find that I thought was worth making
available. (E.g., the only 3.0 release here is 3.0.17, as the rest are
broken.)

If you search the FIXMEs in the code, you’ll find a lot of notes I left
about switching to something else when we have Java 1.6. I think there are
some benefits, but I don’t have a clear idea of how many Mac users would be
unable to run VASSAL if we moved to Java 1.6.

Looks good!

No. Having the latest revision of each X.Y release is sufficient.

We can get an estimate through tracking sites like http://marketshare.hitslink.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpmr=24&qpdt=1&qpct=3&qptimeframe=M This link has about 1/3 of Mac Users still using 10.4 who would be left behind.

Do you have any releases which aren’t in that directory?

I don’t see that the advantages of being able to move to 1.6 are that great
right now to justify the move, then. The number of OS X 10.4 users should
keep declining, though, so it migth be worth checking this a few times over
the course of the year.

Love it Joel, looks awesome as does the rest of the site! I trust you’re not going to ask me to import the phpbb2 forum!? I can change phpbb2 to match your green theme, make it blend right in.

I especially like the front page: test.nomic.net/index.php It’s clean and simple and draws your attention to the thing which matters most… downloading Vassal.

Thus spake “bsmith”:

I was planning to get a dump of the database and import it into phpBB3.

Ahh ok. Remember that’s gonna require code changes in phpBB3 to get it working with a mailing list the way it does now, it’s not a simple switch. There’s going to be some wheel re-invention, probably not worth it unless you think the extra features in BB3 are worth the switch.

Thus spake “bsmith”:

Mail2Forum 2.0 alpha 4 was released at the end of February; the necessary
changes look small, so I’m going to give it a shot.

I just ran across this, regarding Java 1.5:

java.sun.com/products/archive/eol.policy.html

Java 1.5 reaches its End of Service Life on 30 October 2009, which I guess
means that there won’t be any further updates to it from Sun. It’s not clear
to me what effect this has on us, since almost all of our Windows and Linux
users are already using 1.6, and Java for Macs comes from Apple anyway.

Isn’t it the case that Apple never upgraded Java for older versions of the OS? So it’s entirely possible that Apple will just abandon older users to Java 1.5 while the rest of the world moves on. This sounds like planned obsolescence.

Yes, there’s some discussion of that further up this thread.
