Some ideas

Hey, I run the V40k module.
I have some ideas that people keep asking of me, they don’t understand we don’t have control over the engine :unamused:

Anyway, ideas they’ve thrown at me include

-being able to password lock rooms, so you can let people in as you wish
-ability for room host to be able to kick people from room
-a deck feature that doesn’t stack, so saving armies is possible

Erm… if I remember any more I’ll add them

Can I suggest the following:

  1. A pan tool,
  2. A zoom tool (and ideally mouse-wheel pan / zooming), possibly with a “zoom all” button, and maybe even a percentage zoom selector,
  3. The ability to snap the text area onto the right or left of the screen rather than over the top (better for wide-screens),
  4. Microphone support (audio is so much better than typing the whole time),

Thus spake “Gareth Lazelle”:

Could you describe what you mean by this?

Until we’re using JOGL, we can’t zoom rapidly enough for mousewheel zooming
to be useful. You can already pan with the mousewheel.

This is planned for 3.2.

This is being looked into. Do you have a suggestion for what audio system
we use?

Wow - that was quick - I’m not used to such speedy responses!

I should stress that I’m picking faults because I think Vassal is an excellent tool, and hope that the feedback is helpful,

Something like the pan tool on Acrobat, Xara, AutoCAD, etc (select the tool and drag the screen around),

This kind of ties in with my comments about the mouse-wheel - In AutoCAD for example I can click the middle mouse-button in and drag the screen around - in effect duplicating the effect of a pan tool (at the moment the mouse wheel simply scrolls the screen up and down if I’m not mistaken, and middle clicking drags out a selection box),

Fair enough - the ability to zoom in/out would still be quite useful even if it wasn’t tied into the mouse wheel (the overview box is nice, but I can’t place or manipulate large pieces of terrain (for example) onto the overview window), and sometimes being able to precisely set the zoom over an area of interest is extremely useful,

Cool, I’ll look forward to it,

I’m no expert I’m afraid - but having used Sun Tzu (which I might add has a whole host of completely different problems, aside from being unsuitable for wargaming), the Audio makes playing much, much easier,

Thus spake “Gareth Lazelle”:

We appreciate feedback very much.

This, likewise, is planned for when we switch to JOGL for rendering.

You can do some fairly precise zooming with new zoomer already (check the
3.1 beta releases).

Aha - well that took the wind out of my sails then,

It seems you have addressed my concerns already… After close inspection it seems I am currently using version 3.0,

Where can I find the 3.1 beta release?

Many thanks - I’ll look forward to your future releases,

Thus spake “Gareth Lazelle”:

Here’s the announcement for the most recent one, 3.1.0-beta3:

vassalengine.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=972

Keep in mind that this is a beta release, so there might be bugs.
(In fact, I know there are bugs, becuase we’ve fixed quite a few
in the past two weeks since beta3 was released.)

Looks very slick,

The module library is an excellent improvement,

Is this something yet to be implemented, because I can’t currently see it?

(Did manage to report a bug while trying to find it though),

Thus spake “Gareth Lazelle”:

No, it’s implemented. Click on the middle magnifying glass icon in the
toolbar.

Hmmm,

I don’t seem to have a magnifying glass in my toolbar at all?

Is is triggered by an option in the preferences? Or will it display in some modules and not others?

Thus spake “Gareth Lazelle”:

If the map you’re looking at wasn’t built with a zoomer, then you won’t
have it.
