Trying To Build A Module And I'm Completely Lost

I’m trying to build myself a game module and I find that I am completely lost. I have looked at the initial tutorials, but can’t seem to find one that tells me how to make a modular board of hexes that are randomly arranged at the beginning of every game.

Can anyone help me? I’m able to make a basic board that has a grid of hexes on it, but other than that, that’s it. :frowning:

None of the standard components will create a board out of random tiles for you. You’ll probably want to put the hex tiles into a Deck and have players build the board by drawing tiles from the Deck. The Magic Realm module would be a good place to look for an example.

Ugh. I don’t understand this at all, and the tutorials aren’t exactly the most intuitive things ever written

OK. This isn’t the most informative question either.

What have you tried to do so far?
How far do you get?
What do you want to do that isn’t working?
Where do you start getting lost?
Are you able to do the steps in the tutorial at all?

The best way to get started is to download a module from a similar genre as the one you want to produce. Open it in the module editor and look around to see how the game is represented. Use the inline help links to the Reference Manual to understand how the different components work together.

Well, if you want to get picky, the fact that there’s no question mark in my above statement would generally imply that I wasn’t asking a question.

I’ve just tried fiddling around with VASSAL. I can do some of the tutorial for board games, but nothing really amazing. The entire program just isn’t very intuitive to me. I learn better if someone is in front of my demonstrating, not by just reading some instructions.

OK. Let’s see what we can find in the way of resources to do this. I
realize that there are different learning styles.

There are some specific how-to examples posted on the wiki at <http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:main

They are focused examples of Rodney’s suggestion that you look at the
structure of existing modules.

That isn’t exactly a demonstration in the sense of showing you how to
do things. So far, I don’t think anyone has done anything like a
video of constructing a module. Would that be more along the lines of
something that would help you? I’m not quite sure who might have the
inclination to put something like that together, though.

Other than that, one approach – albeit perhaps not the ideal one –
would be to work at the tutorial and ask questions here. Some of the
module designers are very good at coming up with suggestions about how
to accomplish various tasks. I would suggest asking about the areas
that you get stuck on and seeing if that helps.
