Tux wants to play Vassal

I’ve had some problems trying to get Vassal to run on Linux, I’ve started a thread at the 40k Heresy forums too in the below link;

I am running Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty Gibbon x64. I am almost never on my Windows partition and would like to play Vassal since I can’t get some real games in here at college, and in general. The 64 bit processor shouldn’t do anything against it because I’ve had it running on my XP x64 partition. And as stated before, I’m almost never on that anymore.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I run (and develop) VASSAL on Fedora 8 Linux on a 64-bit processor; and
I’m running the same version of Java (1.7.0-b21) as you. This should
work for you.

I see from error message that you’re making the JVM segfault. That’s by
definition not a problem with VASSAL, since Java programs aren’t supposed
to be able to do that.

How are you running VASSAL? When does the segfault happen?

I’m using a 64-bit processor and JVM, Jeff. That’s not the problem. How
do I collect my money?

The missing part of the stack trace might be useful to have, though.

Also: Does ti segfault the same way every time for you?

I’m running VASSAL on a 64-bit Linux setup at work and haven’t had any problems. However, I’m still on Ubuntu 6.10. I’ve never heard of IcedTea 64-Bit Server VM. Is that the default Java VM for Ubuntu 7.10?

I first suspected the JavaVM, but Joel has the same version, so I really don’t know what the answer is. Joel’s right though: a segfault is a serious problem with the JVM setup.

Thus spake “Michael Kiefte”:

IcedTea is the codename for the project surrounding the GPLed 1.7 JVM.
It’s been the default Java on Fedora for a while; I can’t say for Ubuntu.

Here’s what I get when I do ‘java -version’:

[uckelman@scylla uckelman-working]$ java -version
java version “1.7.0”
IcedTea Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0-b21)
IcedTea 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.7.0-b21, mixed mode)

One more thing to check: Is your system up-to-date? This could be caused
by some package which has since been updated.

My system is up to date.

I get the same error every time at the same place.

Maybe if someone can give me a simple walk through I might have ended up misunderstanding what I was doing before.

Thanks for all the replies! I honestly didn’t expect that many so quickly.

At what place? What were you doing when this happened? That’s what we
need to know, and also what the complete output you get in your terminal
is.
