"Unconfirmed" download

I have tried nine ways to Sunday to download the v3.7.18 engine. It gets tagged as “unconfirmed”. I cannot make it “confirmed”. The name changes, too, once downloaded. WTF? I have the Vassalengine website in my “Trusted Sites” list yet it still flags the download.

What OS are you using? What browser? What file are you trying to download?

OS = Windows 10 Pro. Browser = Microsoft Edge. The VASSAL Engine EXE v3.7.15.

Damn typois! v3.7.18.

Which one? There are three for Windows.

Oh, yes…the x86 64-bit for Windows.

Do any of the sections here look like the problem you’re having?

Yes, indeed. I found one thay raised the hair on my neck, it was almost identical. Gonna try it now…again. I have fading vision I probably miss it!

Did not change. Still “unconfirmed”. I did find out that it might br s Mivrisoft thing called “SmartScreen”. Gonna look to if that can be turned off.

Damn typos anyway!

What is the actual problem that the download being “unconfirmed” is causing you? You said the name of the downloaded file changes? To what?

Maybe you could post some screenshots of what you’re seeing.

This is a mark of an incomplete download in some browsers on Windows. The filename will take the form: Unconfirmed-xxxxx.crdownload, where xxxxx is some random alphanumeric string.

Okay but SEVEN incomplete downloads? Something is wrong…perhaps Microsoft is hurrying the process by hamstring all with their last “update” before support ended. I know: paranoia brain destroya. It would figure, though.

It’s hard to help when we can’t see what you’re seeing. You also haven’t posted the filename that you end up with, or given a link to the file you’re trying to download.

It says: “Unconfirmed-#####…” in place of the real filename. This shows up on the Microsoft Edge download list. I think it is a Microsoft SmartScreen “flag”. I am seeing if that garbage can be turned off. I want to blame Microsoft for trying hurry things along by “hamstringing” function in Windows 10. That could have been their late “update” before support was terminated. Freaking marketing swine. Boil ‘em ALL in oil.

It’s okay…I’ll figure it out. I WAS an IT Engineer for DoD before.

I cannot see well so much of this borders on impossible. I have a new MoBo and CPU, memory and a license of Windows 11 Pro on the way. I’ll deal with this stuff after that’s done. It’ll be task enough.

The Beta 8 filename starts out fine but when it finishes it changes to “Unconfirmed ######-download.CRDOWNLOAD. The “Keep” command brings up more of warning and you select either “Delete” or “Cancel”. You know, maybe I should try “Delete” since “Cancel” does just that. Gonna try that.

Nope! That wasn’t it. Delete or Cancel is the same. It is the Windows Defender SmartScreen! I’ll look to see if it can be disabled or turned off.

That’s a dry well, too. I’m stumped. A Vassal download always got flagged when installing but you could git-r-dun. There is really not much to tell or see. It flat will not allow it. Damn Microsoft. They trying to wear a 36 pants with a 48 waist.

Given that, perhaps you’d be willing to try a different route?

Open up Powershell and type

$  Invoke-WebRequest  https://github.com/vassalengine/vassal/releases/download/3.7.18/VASSAL-3.7.18-windows-x86_64.exe -OutFile VASSAL-3.7.18-windows-x86_64.exe

(see also here and here). If your request times-out, which seems to be the problem, then resume the download by passing the option -Resume

$ Invoke-WebRequest https://github.com/vassalengine/vassal/releases/download/3.7.18/VASSAL-3.7.18-windows-x86_64.exe -Resume -OutFile VASSAL-3.7.18-windows-x86_64.exe

That by-passes the browser and downloads the file directly to your current directory.

Yours,
