# Vassal-3.2.10 wont start

Yes that is the complete contents. Vassal will open and function normally once per computer restart. If it is closed, it will not open again until another restart, as others have noted in this thread.

When you have this problem, is java.exe already running before you start
VASSAL? Check in the task manager.

Also, please answer my other question: How did you launch VASSAL when
this errorLog was produced?

I have the same situation that others have described. Once the program is installed, it starts once. After that, it will only start again if one restarts the PC. Also, when I use the uninstall program, it leaves the Vassal folder containing the “lib” folder, so the PC has to be restarted again to remove those. I do not get any error messages; the program just doesn’t start. So, when I brought up the error logs, there was no record. I tried again with the newly posted Version 3.2.11 and still have the same problems.

As I’ve said, all of this is consistent with some process holding open
VASSAL’s files.

How did you “bring up the error logs”? Did you do this by looking at the
errorLog file, or through the Module Manager after the first run
attempt?

That’s unsurprising, because there’s nothing in 3.2.11 which would
address the problem you’re having.
Before attempting to launch VASSAL, check in the Windows task manger
whether java.exe is already running. My suspicion is that it will not be
on your first (successful) attempt and will be on subsequent (failed)
attempts. Please let us know whether this is the case.

Before initially opening Vassal, the task manager reported only Chrome as running. I opened Vassal as usual with no problem. Then I closed it. The task manager again reported only Chrome running. Vassal, as usual, failed to open a second time.
In answer to this:

I don’t know what else to say except what I have repeatedly, that Vassal opens once per computer restart. But isn’t the error log produced when Vassal fails to open?

Would you show me a screenshot of the Task Manager from between the
first and second runs of VASSAL, and then again after the second run?

What I want to know is what did you did to launch VASSAL. There’s more
than one way you could be launching it, and I want to establish which
way you did it.

An errorLog is produced by every run which gets far enough into the
launch process.

What I want to see in particular is the Processes tab. On Windows 8,
you need to go to “More details” to get there. There’s likely to be
a longish list—take enough screenshots so that all of the rows are
visible.
On second thought, don’t bother with doing this after the second run—
what I actually need is the contents of that process list from between a
successful run and a failed run.

Ok, I usually start it from the desktop icon–IIRC whenever I tried to start it form the apps page (or whatever microsoft calls it) it wouldn’t start at all.
Here is a screenshot of the processes tab relevant to Java (the whole thing is much larger than a single screen I looked over the whole list and I did did not see a line for java.exe):

Hold on to that second problem. I’d like to investigate that once we
solve the present one.

There appears to be a context menu available from the column headers in
the Processes tab which lets you determine which columns are displayed.
Please turn on “PID”, “Command line”, and “Process name” and tell me what
those columns say for the “Java™ Platform SE binary” entry between
a successful and a failed run of VASSAL.

I bet what you want to know is hidden by that ellipsis but I could not figure out how to expand it But I did manage to go to the details tab which confirms that java.exe is running

“Context menu” is the standard name for menus you can bring up by
right-clicking on GUI elements.

In fact, that’s precisely the thing I need. If this table is like others
typically found in Windows, then you can widen the Command line column by
dragging the boundaries between the column names. You might need to get
more space in the table by making the task manager dialog larger. It’s
also possible that you can see the complete value of that cell in a
tooltip if you hover over it.

Just spotted this, and tried 3.2.11 on my Surface Pro 2 (which of course, comes with Win 8.1). Vassal does not start. No errors, nothing.

The rest of the Command line will tell us what is remaining open. Once I know that, I can make you a diagnostic build that will tell us what the process is doing. Awaiting your reply.
