I have just Installed Vassal (newest version) and tried to start the wow minis module 2.2. Vassal just displayed an hourglass and didn’t seem to load it at all, even after repeated tries. Vassal seems to be connected to the server, it shows the number of players in each game, but it doesn’t load any modules.
I’ve got the same problem. I cannot open Bucket of dice or Carcassone modules since I have installed version 3.1.x (I have tried with 3.1.5, 3.1.10 and even 3.1.11). However I don’t have any problems while using version 3.0.
I’ve reinstalled Vassal few times, always cleaning up my registers etc.
Vassal started some process, there was an hour-glass icon in a Vassal window… and nothing more. I have waited 5-10 minutes (once I waited almost a quarter of an hour) every time I opened a module, but it didn’t work.
This shouldn’t be the module’s fault. We’ve been using both Bucket of Dice and Carcassonne several times a week, with 3.1.x installed on various platforms, and no such problems occurred. I switched from 3.1.5 to 3.1.10 yesterday and everything seems to run smoothly so far.
Just noticed that your are loading from your Drive D:, is that your CD or DVD drive? Do you have a pagefile sys on your D: drive if it is on your hard drive? Also if Drive D is on the hard drive how big or what is the size of the partition?
Check whether you can run the Player without running the Module Manager:
Open a terminal: Go to Run, type ‘cmd’.
Go to the directory where VASSAL is installed. The default is
C:\Program Files\VASSAL-3.1.12: Type ‘cd C:\Program Files\VASSAL-3.1.12’
in the terminal.
Run the Player: Type
‘java -cp lib\Vengine.jar VASSAL.launch.Player D:\RPG\Vassal\bucket-1.3.vmod’
in the terminal.
However Vassal didn’t open modules when I had started by shortcut (I mean: in a standard way). Moreover if I want to use DOS to start Vassal after I had tried open module in a standard way, I have this report:
Exception in thread “main” java.lang.ClassNot FoundException: Vassal.launch.Player
at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run

at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass

at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal
Could not find the main class:Vassal.launch.Player Program will exit.
So I must open Bucket of dice by DOS-command and not to touch shortcut until I will have reinstalled my Windows, I guess.
Ok, that tells us that the problem is most likely in the connection between
the Module Manager and the Player.
Are you running a firewall on your system? The Module Manager and Player
talk to each other over a local socket. This should not be blocked by
your firewall, but some firewalls behave badly and block local sockets
anyway.
What’s the exact command you’re using when you do this?
I really don’t know - I use both Windows and Ashampoo firewalls, but the problem isn’t caused by a system firewall, because I have tried to open module after I turn it off… and it still didn’t work.
I used the same command as you wrote before. Maybe my english isn’t so good to explain that, so I’d like to write it down point by point for you:
I started Vassal by shorcut/start menu.
I tried to open the module by File->Open module.
Vassal didn’t open the module.
I run “DOS”, typed cmd, then "cd C:\Program Files\Vassal-3.1.12
I typed second line of command: "java -cp lib\Vengine.jar VASSAl.launch.Player D:\RPG\Vassal\bucket-1.4.vmod
DOS reported an error: Exception in thread “main” java.lang.ClassNot FoundException: Vassal.launch.Player
at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run
at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged
at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass
at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal
Could not find the main class:Vassal.launch.Player Program will exit."
However keep in mind, that I can run Vassal and open bucket with the same command if I do not try to use shortcut/start menu to open it in the first place.
There is something else - when I tried to open carcassone module by line of command, it didn’t start and there was a report “unknown type”.
However I’ve tried to start Vassal in that way twice times last week. It had crashed for the first time, generated same report as I quoted above, but after I reinstalled Vassal and made a second attempt (started by shortcut and then by command line) it worked. And yes, I’ve checked while I was typing.
I don’t know, maybe i have some problems with system/javafiles.
Btw, do you know why I cannot open Carcassonne by using a command line?
