VASSAL hangs....HELP!!!

Have 3.1.12 cannot exit program. Simply hangs and need to go to task manager to stop process in order to regain control. Running latest XP. Anybody know what to do? The effect of this is it won’t save a new module for the next VASSAL session…

Tried a variety of modules and uninstalling and reinstalling on a different drive. No joy

Thus spake “andyinkuwait”:

YOu nedd to be more specific. Is it the Player or Module Manager from
which you’re trying to exit?

I can exit from the modules but not from the player manager. That would be the final screen listing all my modules. Exiting from an individual module to this screen is no problem…

Thus spake “andyinkuwait”:

After you’ve killed the Module Manager, but before starting new one, look in
the directory ~\VASSAL (where ~ represents your home directory). On XP this
will be something like C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME, where “USERNAME”
is replaced by whatever your username is. There should be a file called
errorLog there. Post the contents of that here.

As you can see it was a PoG module. I also tried writing a logfile from within the PoG module. This was no problem…

Is there an error dialog box hidden somewhere? When I have your problem it’s usually because there’s a hidden/minimised window or dialog waiting for a response before returning control to the main window.

Maybe I’m not exiting the game screen properly and it is asking me if I want to save the game but because of a rapid exit from this screen, it is still waiting for a response. I will try to investigate further…

No I am exiting normally. The PoG module does not save onto the module list and it totally locks the window. Only way out of it is a forced stop using task manager. It is not only this module that causes the problem…all other modules cause the same problem once the player window has been closed.

I can exit from the module list, no problem, as long as I don’t load a module first. If I do, the module list locks when I try to exit after I’ve exited the player screen.

Of course, when I disable the VASSAL process, the java.exe continues to run, eventually killing off my virtual memory, unless I remember to shut down java as well. I didnt have this problem with previous VASSAL incarnations so why now?

I have the EXACT same issue as andy describes above. No remedy or explanation seems to exist. Has this issue been identified and noted? As above, I can only exit the module list using task manager, and when I go to shut down the PC, it hangs and says java is still running and that is an ordeal shutting that down, too. Very frustrating. Any ideas?

Bounce this topic. Tech guys…this is a pain and it is not resolved yet.

Thus spake “andyinkuwait”:

I see from the errorLog you posted that you’re running the current versions
of neither VASSAL nor Java, which are 3.1.14 and 6 Update 19, respectively.

Try upgrading both and let us know if the problem still persists.

These are old posts bounced up deliberately. I have latest java and vassal and the problem is exactly the same

Thus spake “andyinkuwait”:

Alright, then I’ll build you a specially-instrumented version of VASSAL
tonight so we can see where it’s hanging.

I’m not sure whether it will help or not

Thus spake “andyinkuwait”:

After closing a module, do you get a busy cursor when the Module Manager
window is focused?

No busy cursor. Just freezes on VASSAL.

I can do work on other software. The VASSAL module manager is just frozen in the background and no busy cursor when I move over the module manager. None of the buttons will operate on the module manager although I can move the cursor around.

Thus spake “andyinkuwait”:

Wait, so now you’re saying that the Module Manager hangs when you close
a module? This is not the same as the Module Manager hanging when you
try to close the Module Manager itself. Which of these is happening?

Module manager hangs when I try to exit from it. Module closes successfully.
I have no problems closing a module but freezes when I try to close the manager

Thus spake “andyinkuwait”:

Open and close two modules and then try to close the Module Manager. After
doing that, what processes do you see in Windows’ Task Manager? Do you
see VASSAL.exe once and java.exe twice?

J.

Yes. I see VASSAL.exe and two instances of java both about the same memory usage

Thus spake “andyinkuwait”:

In that case, the problem is that the module instances aren’t closing,
even though they appear to be. The Module Manager is doing the right
thing by waiting for all modules to close. Now I know where to look for
the problem.

It’s too late tonight for me to make you a diagnostic build; I’ll try
to do that on Friday.
