Vassal was working like a champ but now..

I’m getting an Application error (right before I’m usually questioned about the signiture being out ot date). Also Vassal seems to have dissapeared from my system (least my shortcut no longer has the icon). I’m 64 bit vista but it worked fine here previously and the sister system to this it seem to work fine. Anyone have any advice for starting over? I’ve a whole bunnch of error info from teh application error box and it looks like i’m not contacting some file on the server from this system (god knows why) Also when i went for the manual install the bat file fails.

Update…

PUlled off vassal (uninstall said it was broken so now I’m more and more suspecting windows stepped on it somehow) but can’t get a reinstall to work.

.bat file for manual installer is failing on the start javaw command, anyone know where I should be running this from. Seems Java isn’t in my path? Uinstalled and reinstalled java to try to correct but no joy.

Wondering why I ever installed 64 bit windows.

Thus spake “MadApple”:

Unless you have a really compelling reason to use 3.0.17, in your situation
(i.e., having an install problem) I’d recommend trying 3.1.0-beta3. The
betas for 3.1.0 have their own Windows installer which should succeed at
getting VASSAL installed properly for you. (If it doesn’t, I’d like to
know exactly how it failed—I wrote the installer, and I’d like to fix
it if it’s broken.)

downloading and trying new version as per your suggestion. Tx much. Will update shortly on the outcome.

BTW, are old game saves compatible with the new Vassal?

working like a champ…guess I’ll use the new vassal. Any word on if I should install the beta on my other pc (I regularly move the save file back and forth…)

Thus spake “MadApple”:

That depends on what you mean by “old”. Anything which worked with 3.0 is
intended to work with 3.1.

Thus spake “MadApple”:

That’s really up to you. Be aware that you might find some bugs in beta3,
as it is a beta release. (In fact, I know there is at least one, because
we’ve fixed at least one since beta3 was released.) We appreciate bug
reports for the betas, as that’s how problems we haven’t found ourselves
get fixed.

Regardless, I would definitely encourage you to upgrade to 3.1.0 once
we release that.

Well I’ll happily file bug reports, anything I can do to help the good works. I assume the web page will have some kind of announcement when 3.10 comes out? Oddly enough with the install made local I’ll need to keep returning to the page to check.

Incidentally I noticed that the installer puts a shortcut in the quick launch bar. Just a personal preference but most applications offer that as an option and the default it off.

Thus spake “MadApple”:

I have plans for adding an automatic update checker, though I’m not
certain this will be ready for 3.1.0. When 3.1.0 is released, there will
be announcements in many places, yes.

It is offered as an option if you select a Custom install. I don’t have
an impression of what most Windows installers do, as I haven’t used most
Windows software and I’m not a Windows user myself, though I do handle
maintenance for an XP machine. At least for the handful of really popular
apps which I’ve installed, I seem to remember that you get a quick launch
icon without a choice if you select the Standard install. I think Firefox
is that way, as well as Acrobat Reader, though possibly you’ve installed
these on a Windows box more recently than I have.
