Could you provide a bit more context for this?

I am playing Gettysburg 88 and part of a rules clarification states that “units entering the gameboard in the same hex must enter in column”

Aha, it’s a rules question. I’ve never played G88, but I can tell you that
the opposite formation (the one intended for fighting instead of rapid travel)
is “line”. Often games will have units marching in column rotated, marked, or
flipped to denote this, and generally they’ll have some attack and defense
disadvantages.

Hopefully someone familiar with G88 can help you out. You might want to
ask about this on ConsimWorld if you don’t get an answer here. There’s
probably a dedicated G88 forum there.

My interpretation of the entry rule is that it is one that is fairly
common when you have a number of units entering on the same hex at the
same time.

You have to pretend that the units extend off the map in a “column” of
units, so that the first unit to enter gets to use all of its movement
points, but subsequent units have to spend “off-map” movement points
and can only use a reduced movement on the map. This can become a bit
trickier if the entry hex is a road (as it often is), so these may end
up being fractional movement points.

So, the first unit you enter has full MP, the second one adds the cost
of moving one hex and then enters the map, the third unit spends the
cost of moving 2 hexes and then enters, etc.
