It is not uncommon to want to have a regular hex grid, then add some named zones of other shapes around a map border, for example.
Why doesn’t Vassal allow this?
I’m not going to replace the hex grid with a thousand hex-shaped zones. That would drive me crazy.
I haven’t used hex grids myself, but can you not add one to a “multizone grid”? It offers to let me add one in the dialog box (I realize that doesn’t mean it will work!)
