Can we play these ww2 land based wargames solo or does Vassal require an opponent?

vassal is, in general, no different from having the board game in your table. Of course you can play solo.
On the other hand not every game lends itself to solo play. Card driven games or block games with hidden information to the enemy would probably be bad choices.
