Cannot open file menu

I use PCLOS (LINUX) and run java 1.6.0
when i open VASSAL I get the welcome to vassal page (which I cannot close without closing the entire program) and behind it is the module manager. My problem is that I cannot click on file, tools, or help. anything other than moving the window around just does not happen. I’ve been very frustrated with this program, can someone please help by telling me what I may have done wrong?

BTW, I am admittedly a linux noob, so I am likely the culprit here. Also my computer know-how is rather low, so likely also have not given nearly enough info and will need instructions in old man terms. thanks to anyone who helps in advance.

How are you starting VASSAL?

Please post a screenshot of the problem.

this is where I open VASSAL

it then asks me what I want to do, I click “run”

finally I get here, where I can go no further

I try clicking on “file” at the top, but nothing happens, I have to move the first screen out of the way to even see the second, the first being the one that says “welcome to VASSAL” at the bottom. The second being the one telling me to open the file menu, which I cannot click on.

The dialog you are moving out of the way is a modal dialog, meaning
that you MUST deal with it before interacting with the rest of the
application. The way to do that is using the buttons at the bottom of
the dialog—which, by appearances, are off the bottom of your screen.
(You must be running at a very low screen resolution for that to
happen.) Drag the dialog upwards so that you can see the buttons.

The whole dialog should look something like this:

Cannot move window any higher, and my screen res is as high as I can get it.

What window manager are you using? It should provide you a way to drag
the top of that dialog off the top of your screen from a position
somewhere in its middle. (E.g., in my window manager, I can drag windows
from arbitrary locations by holding ALT when I drag.)

I can drag off the bottom or sides, but not of the top. I found a semi-solution, I turned the screen sideways using my monitor settings. I suppose I’ll have to do that every startup. Aggravating, but doable. Thank you for dealing with me patiently.

BTW, I have been banging against the resolution issue for a bit here, I really don’t understand linux well at all, but it appears my resolution is 1024X600 and cannot go higher. I don’t know about a windows manager, I only know I am using PCLOS Gnome  sorry.

That dialog is normally shown only on the first run—it’s never shown
again after you successfully close it, unless you delete your preferences
directory.

Look in your menus for something called “Displays”. That’s where you set
the screen resolution in GNOME.
