I play one or two scenarios a week with a friend and we’ve been experiencing some issues with tactician cards lately and wonder if it’s us not using the automation correctly or if it’s actual bugs. The issues only started recently. A month ago we weren’t having the problems. I did go through the forum to see if anyone else had posted about this, but didn’t find anything. If it is there and I missed it, I apologize for creating the new thread.
Full disclosure: We’re playing the C&C version from at least 6 months ago, so if there have been updates since then, we haven’t gotten them. Also, we’ve been using an older version of Vassal, so there’s that, as well. We’re updating Vassal before our next game session, but I wanted to check in here beforehand anyway. If you’re wondering, I do make sure the G, M & T rules are enabled before we play.
The issues: The most recent problem has been with the Light Infantry Skirmish card. It’s happened several times for both players. The card is played and applied to the unit with no problem, but once the unit is moved in accordance with the card, it doesn’t allow it to be designated as an attacker if it moves more than one space, as if standard rules applied.
There have been a couple other cards that glitched, as well. I don’t remember which ones off the top of my head, but the basics are the same. The card is played and applied to a unit, but the effects don’t work properly. There have been a few cases in which we found we were at fault after consulting the rules, but several where we could find no reason at all for the fault. In those instances, we’ve taken to manually rolling and applying results. Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?
Also, we’ve been loving the game, so Kudos to whomever had a hand in putting it on Vassal. Thank you.
I am the developer for C&C Nap modules version 4 and version 5 (the later being in development on and off for the past couple of years). It seems that you are using version 5, of which the current release (from December '24) is 5.1beta11. Download latest versions from the module page.
I am aware of issues with Light Infantry Skirmish in 5.1beta11 such as you describe. If you find that you can’t apply an attack marker, there are two ways to restore normal operations:
If there is an attack marker on screen, drag it onto the Light Infantry unit, this will force the combat to initialise.
Otherwise, the context menu (right-click) on each unit provides a Special menu option to Reset Combat Status. After that, the Attack command should work again.
If you have any other specific examples, I may be able to help there too.
I am glad that in other cases you have found the module helpful as a guide to the rules. That is one of my aims for 5.1, whilst retaining the possibility to override the automation if need be.
I have been working on a next release, which improves Light Infantry Skirmish and deals with other Tactician card issues of which I am aware, amongst other fixes and enhancements. I took a pause on this in recent weeks but I hope to get back to it later this year.
Thanks for relaying your experience. I hope that you continue to find the module useful.
Thank you very much for your time and reply. They are appreciated, as is the time and effort you and anyone else involved have put into these modules. As I mentioned, we’ve been loving the game.
I think we have tried to reset the combat status and it didn’t work for that particular issue, but I may be mistaken, as we each tried a variety of ways on our separate ends to fix it that didn’t work, so we usually ended up undoing all of our supposed fixes and starting over. Basically, we were throwing ideas at the wall and seeing if anything stuck. If it didn’t, we backed up and tried something else while promptly forgetting what we’d just done. In the future, if we do find any other issues, I’ll pay closer attention and maybe even take a few notes, so that I can be less vague about it.
The only constant source of issues we’ve had with the game is that neither of us are ever satisfied with our die rolls. But I guess that’s really our problem and not yours.
