No matter where I set my preferences it says ‘Heap size too large’ it then resets to 128 and some of the mods are just too large for that. What, shy of buying a new computer or more ram, can I do?

yourself, not to use the 128MB size your max heap has been set to as a fail
safe.
To what did you have your max heap set in the first place?

I have run the gambit on this, from 1024 to 100 and less. It is very confusing and might I say frustrating when you use a number under 128 or even 128 itself and it rejects it and gives you 128.

It won’t let you set a size below 128MB because it’s unlikely to work well
with anything less than 128MB.
