Describe what you’ve tried to do so far.

  1. Because VASSAL is a java program, you will need to install OpenJDK Java 7 Runtime from the Ubuntu software center.

  2. Download VASSAL to your computer. It will arrive in the form of an archive file called a tarball: VASSAL-3.2.16-linux.tar.bz2

  3. Right click on the downloaded tarball file and select “Extract Here.” You will then see a folder called VASSAL-3.2.16-linux

  4. Open the extracted folder and find the VASSAL.sh file (which is a script that starts java and loads VASSAL in it). Right click on VASSAL.sh and select “Execute” - you could also just double click on it like any other program. You should see the VASSAL module library momentarily.

If it doesn’t run, you will have to mark VASSAL.sh script as executable. Right click VASSAL.sh and select Properties. In the Permissions tab, be sure that the file is allowed to run as a program (i.e. marked executable).
