Logfile errors

I have the latest version of Vassal and of all the modules I use. I have increasingly been having a problem trying to save logfiles on the Pacific War and Great War in Europe: Deluxe modules. Starting the logfiles is no problem, but once I have completed all my moves and try to save it as a logfile to post to my opponent, it is sending an error message and won’t do it. This has been happening for some time with PW and is intermittent. I have used GWIE for a long time without problems, but it has just started doing the same thing over my last 3 attempts to save logfiles. Is there anything I can do about this?

My system is:
Aspire E1-531 PC laptop
Intel B960 processor (2.2GHz, 2MB L3 cache)
15.6" HD LED LCD
4 GB DDR3 Memory
500 GB HDD
DVD-Super Multi DL drive
Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/n
6-cell Li-ion battery

Thanks for any help you may be able to give,

Ivor.

What’s the error message?

J.

J,

Two things happen; one is an error which opens as a sort of pop-up over the open game file saying it is unable to save the file with an option to a link for more details. When this is clicked on reams of writing comes up which takes substantial scrolling down and cover bullets and sub-bullets, most of which seem to relate to Java. I can’t seem to cut and paste this otherwise I could include it with this message.

The other is that in the folder where I save the games automatic zip folders save with each having a different name, one example being tmp388331334240462312. They all start with tmp followed by a long number. On opening they give 3 file options; moduledata (1KB), savedata(1KB) and savedGame(87KB). None of these open to anything though. Such a folder saves each time I try to save a logfile.

I can provide more info on what the error is reading, as after having saved 2 x logfiles in a row, it has now (at a critical point involving several successful attacks) failed to save again. A box comes up with a big X in the tope left corner and the following message: VASSAL was unable to write file ‘C:\Users\Ivor\Desktop\Wargame\GWiE\GW SepII.vlog.’

It gives a link to Show Details, which opens a box that gives about 100 lines of script such as:
java.io.IOException: Unable to overwrite C:\Users\Ivor\Desktop\Wargame\GWiE\GW SepII.vlog: file does not exist. Data written to C:\Users\Ivor\Desktop\Wargame\GWiE\tmp…long list of numbers as shown in previous e-mail…zip instead. This tmp zip folder saves to the desktop and gives the options I have articulated above, but they don’t open.

Then there are sub-bullets below this each starting with “atVASSAL” or “atJavax” followed by various bits of info going of interminably until the next bullet starting “Caused by…” and then more sub-bullets then a link saying “41 more”.

I am unable to cut and paste from this dropbox, but that is the general flavour.

I have tried re-downloading the latest Vassal module but that makes no difference.

Everything you’re seeing in the error dialog is coming from the errorLog.
Look in the Module Manager under Help > Show Error Log after having the
problem. We need the contents of the errorLog in order to help you.

J.

J,

The Error Log holds an enormous amount of data - I scroll down interminably to get to the bottom after another failure tonight with Pacific War (this time). It also won’t allow me to copy and paste what is in the dialog box. Is there something specific I should be looking for?

If you’re on an OS where you can’t copy from the dialog, then you can
find the errorLog file directly:

vassalengine.org/wiki/Error_Logs

J.

J,

Thank you for your time with this, I do appreciate it and I’m sorry to be such a headache. I have followed your directions. I am on Windows 8 so went into Users, but under my username there is no AppData\Roaming\VASSAL. The only way I can access the ErrorLog is by opening my Vassal folder on the desktop and going into Help. It then gives me the reams of data which I cannot copy.

That directory might be hidden. There’s a setting in the file manager
for showing hidden directories.

J.

J,

Not the most IT literate individual, I’m afraid. Is the File Manager C\Users?

The file manager is a program, not a location. I believe you can run it
from the context menu you get from right-clicking on the Start button.
