Hey, I’m new here but not new to wargaming. I was just wondering what would be the best game to invest my time learning into, as in what games are currently popular on the site and have plenty of potential opponents once i have learned the game. looking for something historical but other then that I’m not set on any particular time period or event just a good popular game that would be worthwhile learning. bonus if its also soloable game
Here’s a list of possible games - all of these modules are made by me (shameless self-plug ). As a bonus, they are all available as Print’n’Play (see the below linked pages). The list is roughly sorted in ascending complexity.
Since you’re not new to wargaming, I would have thought that you would have first checked the vassal implementations of the games that you are already familiar with and enjoy.
Note that you can see which games have been recently played on Vassal by looking at the Server Status page on Vassal. The more heavily played games are the ones where you might be more likely to find an opponent.
There are so many games (modules) available on Vassal that I (like everyone I expect) am completely unfamiliar with most of them. Of those I know of, I would highlight the Paths of Glory module. It is a fun card driven game about WWI which is heavily played, and the module implementation is among the finest available.
If you weren’t already aware, you should know about the BoardGameGeek website. It has a page for just about every game, including a Forum section where people discuss rules, strategy, etc. You can look for online opponents there, and those forums sometimes also discuss the vassal module, if it exists.
One should be a little sceptical when interpreting the numbers on that page.
First off, it only shows those that play server-hosted games, and then only those that are hosted through vassalengine.org. One can set-up ones own server.
Secondly, the count next to each module is sometimes misleading, because a user may set-up a room (or even multiple rooms), but never be joined by other players.
Thirdly, there are modules that show up on that page which are nowhere to be found in the Game Library - or some with names written in Kanji or Chinesee traditional.
