Are you still looking for opponents to play ASL? I am retired and am looking to start playing ASL again. I live on the east coast of the US.
Perhaps you want to take a look at the project Advanced Squad Leader: Starter Kit #1 - shameless self-plug 
The game Advanced Squad Leader: Starter Kit #1 (ASLSK#1) , is designed as an introduction to Advanced Squad Leader (ASL), with some parts of the rules simplified. The ASLSK#1 module is likewise designed to be a gentle introduction to using VASSAL with ASL.
The module, for example, limits the actions that can be taken to specific phases, and helps by offering a simple interface. It also contains a tutorial that one can go through to see how the module works.
Note that the module above only covers ASLSK#1 - ASLSK#2 (ordenance), 3 (vechicles), 4 (Pacific Theatre, hidden units), as well as the various extensions are not covered.
Of course, if you want to play the full ASL, then you should grap the VASL module. It has many extensions to define all sorts of things in VASSAL.
