Map Zoom Freezes Game

Hi everyone,

I am facing a recurring issue with Vassal; and I’m hoping someone here can help / confirm if it’s a known bug. :upside_down_face:

The problem occurs when I use the zoom function on the map during gameplay. The game frequently freezes for several minutes; and sometimes I have to force quit the application and restart it. This happens inconsistently – sometimes right at the start of the session; other times mid-game. It’s becoming a major disruption, especially during longer gameplay.

Below are the details of my setup:

Vassal Version: 3.6.7

Operating System: Windows 10 (64-bit)

Java Version: Java 8 Update 311

Modules Affected: Twilight Struggle; Axis & Allies; Commands & Colors

I have cleared Vassal’s cache multiple times; Completely reinstalled Vassal with the latest version (3.6.7). Verified system performance, ensuring no other applications are using excessive resources.

Updated Java to the most recent version (Java 8 Update 311); Tried increasing memory allocation in Vassal’s preferences.

Despite all of these steps; the freezing issue persists. What’s puzzling is that it doesn’t seem to be tied to any specific module since it happens across different games. This issue is particularly frustrating when it occurs mid-session; sometimes causing the game to crash and lose progress.

Has anyone else faced this issue with the zoom function freezing Vassal; and is there a confirmed workaround or fix? I have ckecked https://obj.vassalengine.org/images/8/8c/Userguide.pdf- sfmc documentation guide but still need help .

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your time and support! :slightly_smiling_face:

You do realize that Vassal’s latest version is 3.7.14? I would recommend trying that first.

The version of Java you have installed on your system for general use won’t be relevant, and updating it won’t have anything to do with your issue. For years now VASSAL has come with its own self-contained Java version that it uses instead of your system-installed one.

You might find the Direct3D Pipeline preference worth trying–it is relevant to video problems on Windows systems. I would also echo the recommendation to get and install the current version of VASSAL, unless you have some niche need to keep using such an old version (this is quite uncommon).
