New Monitor, Vassal type now too small to see

Just upgraded to a new monitor and now have to squint to read vassal type. Suggestions? Thanks.

Sounds like the ā€˜upgrade’ monitor was a backward step. Alternatively see an optometrist.

You may need to be more specific here. Perhaps a screen shot. Tried zooming in maybe. Lots of options, but difficult given the very limited data given.

It sounds to me like your new monitor supports higher resolutions and the one you’ve set it to has more pixels per inch than your old one.

You can try setting your monitor to a smaller resolution, or better yet - see if the vassal windows you are having trouble reading support a zoom in feature.

Do you have your vassal game set to the default Combined Windows setting? If so, try unchecking that box in your module settings, then relaunching. This will break up your single combined vassal window into multiple ones which can be individually sized.

You can try to set the scale of text on the monitor.

Which Operating System are you using? Try the below

There might be a way to change the font used by Vassal, but I can’t remember exactly how that’s done. That could be investigated if the above doesn’t work.

BTW, if and when you get an answer that solves the issue, remember to mark that answer - could be your own - as the solution. That will help other users find solutions to their problems.

Yours,
Christian

That reminds of an incident with my father, back when I was around 15.

He’d caught me in the sordid act and said that if I continued I would eventually go blind. I told him not to worry and that I would just do it until I needed glasses.

You change the font size in Vassal for the text on menus and buttons.

Start Vassal and load a module.

Goto the File menu, select Preferences, on the General tab near the top is Override default font size.

Pick a font size, say 12, or 16. Type that into the box to override the default value of 0.

Hit the Ok button at the bottom of the Preferences screen.

Close Vassal down.

Start Vassal, load a module. Text on the menu bar, and on piece menus will be (hopefully) bigger. You may need to experiment with different Font Size values to find the size that best suits your eyes and computer hardware.

FWIW -

BIG and HIGH RESOLUTION monitors are two different things and it’s important to pay attention to BOTH when getting a new monitor.

While a higher resolution monitor sounds like a good thing, it’s often NOT for the following reasons:

  1. Text will be smaller and sometimes unreadable

  2. More expensive sometimes outrageously so (e.g., 4k)

  3. You typically need a high powered (and thus expensive) video card to get decent performance out of a high resolution monitor.

As an ā€œolderā€ guy with poor eyesight, I found that a BIG, but average resolution monitor gave me the best of all worlds. So I bought a gaming 27ā€ 1080p monitor. I can (mostly) read text, I get good frame rates on my games, I have lots of screen space, and it was a modest cost…

Just change the Display Resolution down from 1920x1200 or something lower, older monitors were something like 1024x768. Changing the Scale can cause problems with some applications so I would not do that myself! Got an app that blows up anytime I drag it to a 125% screen!
