I have the board game so I am very familiar with the rules, but I can’t tell how this game is played in Vassal. For example, it will let me draw more cards than the rules allow. I understand the right-click functionality of ordering units, but how do you designate when your impulse is over?
BTW, this is a great game and I am excited to try this new version. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Just play it the same way you would the cardboard board game.
Well, neither does the cardboard box when you play the real game The counter in the flags above the Decks shows you how many cards each player currently has in their hand.
The easiest way is to type into the Chat box ‘I’m done, Your turn now’.
I don’t actually play SoS, so I am open to suggestions from players on how to improve the module, however, I am not a fan of gratuitous automation and enforcement of every little aspect of the rules.
Thx for the replies. I have been used to computer based games managing everything for you, but this is not bad at all. Now I just need to find someone else who will play this title with me!
VASSAL is not designed to implement computerized versions of games. VASSAL is an ‘assistive technology’ to enable people to play games they already know how to play (and own!). A lot of work goes into making the modules as they are now. The amount of work to make proper ‘computerized’ versions of the games would be 10-fold, it is just not feasible.
I am enjoying playing the “Storm Over Stalingrad” module but I have one more question. No matter which option I select for a new game, I am unable to see BOTH the German cards and the Russian cards. If I am the Germans, for example, I am unable to see the Russian cards or play them. Since I am primarily playing offline and solitaire, it unbalances the game to not be able to play cards from both sides. Any recommendations?
If there is not an option already to play the side “Solo” available in the
module, you can edit the module and add this as a side.
You would have to give this new side access to all private windows and/or
restricted stuff defined by a player side.
Alternatively, notify the module creator and have them add it in for you.
In the meantime till that happens you would have to utilize the “retire”
button to switch sides as you need to
Thanks, but it’s not on my toolbar. Vassal does say the module contains obsolete custom code, so maybe the toolbar is not functioning properly anymore?
