PLaying Online in your own Game Server !!!

I have dream …

The idea is simple …

At the present time a game module is launched in a local computer to play online with others …

But, my dream will be to put a module directly in a provider directory and to launch it over the web with a simple browser … I’m not skilled enough in developement, but i have seen words like servlet in java …

A good way too to create plenty of vassal own servers … if the main one is down …

I have seen this concept in a game Engine named Game Factory 2, in which after the module creation, you can convert it and using a dedicated plugin in Active X technology allows to play it online in a simple browser …

Thus spake “soft-bug”:

There’s two problems with this that I see:

  1. A lot of newer modules are quite large. With today’s network speeds,
no one would want to wait to redownload a 50MB module each time they
use it. Now that we have file associations (at least on Windows and
Macs), it should be possible to open a .vmod directly from your browser,
    though.

  2. Launching VASSAL from WebStart (the Java web launcher for apps) was
so problematic for people that we’ve dumped it for 3.1.

could you elaborate on the webstart problems? I’m a fan of webstart as we use it a lot at work and am wondering where the problems came up with vassal?

The most annoying bug is that Mac OS, throws an exception when trying to patch a jar file (running jardiff on the server). The only way around it is to clear the file cache so that you download everything fresh. Other than that, it’s mostly convenience: people like being able to copy files onto a flash drive to install on a non-networked computer or they want an easy way to adjust the memory allocation.
