Restoring Purchases

I purchased Phantom Leader and Stuka Leader back in January 2026 (last time I used Vassal) but those modules no longer appear. I’m not sure what direction I need to go in order to gain access to them again.

Purchased the modules from whom?

DVG’s website. 11 and 15 January

Where are the module files on your drive?

I don’t know. Where ever they automatically download to I guess. I have played both of them before, on Vassal. Would they be in one of the “jre” or “lib” folders??

No, files you’re downloading should not be in any of Vassal’s own directories.

Do you know what the files are called? Or any words in the filenames? If so, you could use whatever filesystem search your OS provides for finding them. Which OS are you using?

Some things to try (Assuming you are on a PC, not MAC)

Go to your downloads folder and look at the files downloaded dated 11 and 15 January or just do a search within the Downloads folder for “Phantom” “Stuka” or “Leader” and reinstall then.

Or,

Look to see if the Dan Verssen files unpacked to a folder for DVG or something similar to see if they are located there.

If you can’t find the files on your computer, if you purchased them from Dan Verssen Games, they should have your account on file and allow you to re-download the files anew.

Good luck.

Vassal does not sell modules itself. Some publishers sell Vassal modules of their games, and if you’ve lost the module file, you would need to contact the publisher to restore a purchase from them.

Other publishers provide or allow free Vassal modules, and those should be available from the Game Library.

Typically when you download files via your web-browser, they will end up in your user’s Downloads folder. Those are typically

System Directory
windows Windows C:\Users\<username>\Downloads
macosx MacOS /Users/<username>/Downloads
linux Linux /home/<username>/Downloads

where <username> is your username on the machine in question. You can search those directories for any file ending in .vmod.

The list of known modules is stored in the V_Global preferences file (see Where are my user preferences stored?. If that file is somehow lost, overwritten, or corrupted, then it may appear as if Vassal has forgotten about a module.

If you stored your Vassal modules on some cloud drive - e,g, OneDrive, and that cloud storage was not available and you did a Tools→Clean-up modules, then those modules will be removed from the module manager. Note, however, that you must do Tools→Clean-up modules - otherwise you will still have modules listed, but grayed out to indicate they are not available at this point. If they do become available in the registered location, and will no longer be grayed out.,.

I found it. Searched my downloads folder.

Then please mark the question as solved by selecting one of the posts as the solution (can be anyone which you think best describes the solution). It really helps others find the solution to their problems, and only you, as OP, can do it.

@uckelman do you think it would be possible, when an OP replies to a thread, to prompt that user if the problem was solved and to ask the user to mark the solution? Many people forget to do that, and it is really a shame because doing so helps others.

Christian

That would involve some sort of change to Discourse or its solved plugin. Maybe we could avoid the problem by disabling the solved plugin.

I think it’s still a good idea to have the check-mark - it helps people see what is going on - even if not all users are using it as they are supposed to.
