Running 2 versions of Vassal on same computer

I want to play Squad Leader which uses an older version of Vassal and C&C:Napoleonics new expansion which needs the current version. I tried to install both versions but am unsuccessful. Can two diffenrent versions exist on the same computer?

Yes. Can you describe in what way you were unsuccessful?

J.

I have been doing this with 3.1.20 and 3.2.2 for various OCS modules with no problems.

I just have to avoid using 3.2.2 and saving a 3.1.20 .vlog or v.sav.

I have an older version of Vassal on my desktop. I download the current version of Vassal and run it. Instead of creating a another version of Vassal it updated the older version …I did this a few times …Even when the older version was in my recycle bin…it was updated by running the current version of Vassal.

Are you using Windows? My guess is that you’re choosing a Standard
install in the installer. That removes older verisons. You want to do
a Custom install instead.

Joel,

Perhaps it might be a good idea / confirmation measure for less sure to just add
a step in the standard install “I’ve detected a previous version of Vassal - Do
you want to overwrite it? Yes/No” type of screen w/ radio buttons. select yes
overwrites, select no places in directory based on the version number like the
custom install

Isn’t it still the norm for an installer to remove old versions? It was
when I wrote the installer.

J.

I expect so. I notice that confirmation step a lot more though either through
the “are you sure?” type screen like I described or a summary screen right
before the install with “I’m removing this old stuff and putting in this new
stuff at this location” type list

It acts to inform the user whats going to take place if they didn’t know already

  • a last chance to reconsider if they didn’t know / aren’t sure etc…

Would simply eliminating the Standard install as an option be an
acceptible solution?

J.

I didn’t remember the screen steps of the custom install so had to run one real
quick to see. Seems clear enough what its doing so that seems like a way to go.

Presumably it would skip the keep/remove screen if there were no versions
previously installed? On the location screen I might consider adjusting the
field caption to “Destination Folder (the default is recommended)” - if you
think that might be useful/troubleshooting purposes. Obviously if some one
changes the location you would think they know what they are doing otherwise

Thanks for your help. Problem solved.
