This module won’t open. I’ve started to develop a passing familiarity with Vassal’s editing tool. Does anyone have advice on how to start troubleshooting?
Would you provide a link to the module? And whatever error messages there are.
It looks like the buildfile is corrupt.
On the plus side The image folder looks OK. And IMO getting all the images is the hardest part of making a module.

P.S. again IMHO I love all the Red Sash games, I hate the Lace War counter Graphics, But I also hate the taste of pineapples. Obviously much of the world population have lesser opinions than me
Thanks. I assume that means my course of action is to create a new module with the existing image files? Sounds like a good project for learning.
Here’s the link. Module Library - Vassal
No error message, just doesn’t open. Thanks.
Have you tried contacting the project owner about the problem with the module?
yes. This was my second recourse.
Also, where did that image file come from?
The buildFile
didn’t look corrupt to me from glancing at it. It’s possible that it’s just too old for current Vassal. You might try opening the module in 3.2 to see if that works; if it does, then saving the module out in 3.2 might be enough to make it work with 3.7.
A .vmod file is just a Zip file by another name. The name change clues in the vassal engine that it is also a module.
So use whatever ZIP program you are most comfortable with (I use 7-Zip). I place a copy of the module in a new sub-folder I call ZIP. then I unzip the .vmod file.
You will get BuildFile & moduledata files, plus maybe some .vsav or help files. there will also be a folder called ‘images’ every graphic used in the module will be in the image folder.
On another note, here is a crowded .vmod file that looks like it was never cleaned up before posting (Just my opinion). There are a bunch of the same scenario .vsav files from different versions of the module. Same for the PDF help files.
You can see that it also has a sound folder, I have not yet found where the sound is used in the module. but its a short clip of La_Maresillaise maybe the french have to win??
Redboot to add on to Mr Uckelman’s statement. the picture below is what the inside of the buildFile looks like. Unless you can read (and understand ) as well as plain English, I recomenr NEVER poking around in these files.
I have played around a bit. Cut and paste and save tons of work in here. Problem I have is about 95% of the time I completely brick the module and have to use an different copy.
