Unable to Connect to Server - MacOS

  • VASSAL version 3.7.14 and also 3.7.13
*macOS Monterey 12.7.6 (probably the best I can do on a bottom rung iMac from 2015)
  • 8GB RAM
  • Problem occurs in all modules, for example Empire of the Sun (2nd Edition) version 5.11

  • In the last few days, I have been unable to connect to the Vassal server in any module I have. I receive the following message every time, no matter which module (

  • Unable to establish connection to server: Connection refused

  • Disconnected.

I have disabled the firewall, turned off the VPN, rebooted, and the problem persists. I am not having any other connectivity issues with other programs/apps. I have used Vassal for years on this machine without this problem coming up.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Transient server failures are the most common reason for this error.
Is this problem happening for you right now? Certainly, the Vassal server is up.

So, if it’s a problem on your machine, it may be that you’ve accidentally or some other how got an obscure preference mis-setting.

Go to Preferences (on Mac, it’s from the module’s drop down menu, left of the File menu).

Find the Server tab. It should look like something below - with Vassal Server being (Current). If Vassal Server is NOT current, then that is your problem. Select the Vassal Server line and then hit the Set Current button.

Curiously (to me), though this is a Global Setting it has to be set from any Module preferences rather than the Vassal Module Manager app.

You totally nailed it, the Vassal server was no longer current. No idea how it got deselected as I never even knew how to get into that menu!

Thanks a bunch!

If you get OCLP then you can install macOS 14 on your 2015 iMac. I got Sonoma running on a 2014 MacBook Pro and an Early 2013 MacBook Pro.
