VASL won't open...

Good morning, and Happy new year to everyone.

My name is Steve, and i started a game of ASL on VASL a month or so ago, and updated VASSAL to 3.1.15 just recently. Now I am getting an error message when trying to open VASL. “Unable to launch the application”. I will add the “Details” at the end of this post.

I have VASL 5.8, VASSAL 3.1.15 running on a MacBook Pro. Mac OSX.6.5, with 2 NVidea graphics cards, 9400M and a 9600M GT, for a total of 756 MB, 4GB RAM and 60+ GB of free space on the hard drive.

The program was running perfectly prior to the update. I have deleted VASL and reloaded, both with the .jnlp file and by downloading the program wholly, and still get the same error message using both methods of opening VASL.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Steve

I have VASL 5.8,

This is your problem. VASL 5.8 is not compatible with VASSAL 3.1+. You
need to upgrade to the current version of VASL, which is 5.9.2.

Good morning J. and Robbie.

Robbie, thanks for the link, I will take a look.

J., I have gone back to the VASL.org site, and it has 5.8 as the latest version. Also, I tried to open VASL by clicking on the “Launch Current Version” link, but that gave me the same error message. Where else would I get version 5.9.2?

Steve

Robbie and J., now that I read the link Robbie, I see I need to go to the VASSAL site and d/l a new mod. Okay.

Perhaps someone could put that message up on the VASL.org site? It would be helpful to know if that site is no longer the current one to use.

Thanks again guys…

I’ve been trying for many months now to prevail on someone to update the
VASL site…

The current version is available here:

If I could get someone to update the site, then we wouldn’t have this
problem—we’d make it current again.

J.

Perhaps we should take it over since it now uses the basic engine ( in
effect). I think that would be easier

I’ve emailed Rodney about it again.

Hi all…

I have followed links and downloaded updates and unzipped files, but there is no VASL.mod file at the end of the yellow brick road. I have tried the d/l several times, and done a search of my hard drive, but there is no VASL.mod file anywhere after unzipping VASL592.zip. What am I not doing?

Thanks

What are you getting after you unzip the download? And are you on a Mac, by any chance?

These are the contents of the module file, which you’re seeing because
you’ve (possibly unintentionally) unzipped it.

J.

I have no knowledge at all about Macs - but I do recall reading of a similar problem somewhere abd it might be the Mac OS that is unzipping the file:

mattwoodward.com/blog/index. … F3F4417848

Have a look at this it may or may not help.

I looked at the file and it looks like the download itself -is- the module. You shouldn’t unzip it. (A module is just a zip file.)

Try renaming it from .zip to .vmod and then opening it in VASL. (I believe if you double-click on it, Mac OS will think it’s a zip file and unzip it for you, which you don’t want.)

As others have said, the file has been helpfully? unzipped by your Mac.

See vassalengine.org/wiki/Faq_ge … h_of_files

Thanks guys…I modified the preferences as directed, and then unzipped the file, and it created VASL.mod, which works fine.

Thanks again!
