Vassal runs terribly on my new MacBook

Im running a new MacBook Pro M1 max with 32Gigs. My old MacBook ran Vassal beautifully. But this one won’t. It’s very slow to respond. I’ve tried both Mac versions of vassal the Intel and Apple versions and I don’t see a difference. What simple thing am I missing?

You must use the aarch64 build for M1 Macs–the Intel version will do you no good. After installing, launch VASSAL. Go into the Preferences. Make sure this box is ticked:
