Vassal seems to run slow on Windows 8

I notice it particularly when opening and closing modules. I don’t know if it’s hardware or software bottlenecks. Any recommendations?

(Don’t run many java programs, so maybe I need to optimize java somehow? Or switch to linux instead of windows?)

Slow in comparison with what? Which modules?

Without any other details, my guess is that you have your max heap set
too low.
