Version 3.0 and web start

Is there a way to run the vassal 3.0 engine without using web start, as with other Java applications? Due to some limitations, I can use only Java 1.4.2, under which prior versions of Vassal worked fine. Using 1.5 creates some compatibility problems. Although they can (eventually) be sorted out, I don’t feel it to be worth the effort if there is an alternative.

The few other java programs I use work fine – the problem is strictly related to web start.

Tx.

On the download page there are links to “manual installations” of all VASSAL versions. These don’t depend on web start at all. However, you will get lots of errors if you try to run VASSAL 3.0 using Java 1.4.

Thus spake “yggrdrasil”:

Starting with version 3.0, VASSAL requires Java 1.5 or later. What exactly
is preventing your from running Java 1.5 (or 1.6)?

Apple seems to have cut Java off at 1.4.2_12 for OS X 10.3.9 (which is all I have available for my Mac laptop).

Thus spake “Rindis”:

Would it be possible for you to use SoyLatte on your machine?

This seems to be limited to 10.4 and 10.5 as well. At least according

Hmmm. I might have to bite the bullet and get an additional 10.4
license at home to upgrade my (now 1GHz) G3 to 10.4 from 10.3.9, since
it would be nice to have another machine capable of running the latest
Vassal. Bummer. It looks like Apple doesn’t sell those anymore, and
10.5 doesn’t run on a G3. Sigh.
