vlog files recognized as zip files

Hello,

I hope this is the right forum for this. When I use the most recent IE or Chrome to download .vlog or .vsav games from my gmail account to a folder on my hard drive IE and chrome auto-detect them to be zip files and add a .zip extension on them. This doesn’t happen with the old IE 7 we use at work though, just with the modern browsers.

Is there a way to tell the browsers that .vlog/.vsav are their own extensions?

Thanks,

Ken

You might try right-clicking the link you want and select Save Target As… …or whatever IE says for that command. Otherwise, I don’t know how to change that from happening.

I’ve been told this is quite common with IE. One of the myriad reasons I dislike using it. I’ve also noticed that the newer versions of IE will not allow me access to my cookies from the browser (or I haven’t figured it out yet). To me, this is inexcusable. If my AVG tells me I have a tracking cookie on my system, I have to physically go to my cookies folder and remove it.

Have you tried a Mozilla browser like Firebird or Sea Monkey. Personally, I’ve used the Sea Monkey suite (formally Mozilla) for over 10 years and it’s still the best browser out there, imo. It includes an option for Uploading Files to FTP sites which most browsers don’t have …and which I’ve found to be quite handy when transferring big files to download sites and my web site without having to resort to a separate FTP program. …and it has a fully functional cookie manager. Best of all, it’s free!

Another nice feature is an Add-on for Sea Monkey called AdBlock. It removes all those annoying banners that we all run into all the time.

The only problem I’ve experienced is that some sites are specifically made for the IE browser. If I absolutely have to visit that site, then I will reluctantly use IE but this is getting to be pretty rare.

All your IE bookmarks, etc. can be imported into SeaMonkey so you may want to give it a try.

I actually use Chrome but found that this happens on IE and Chrome. I used to use Firefox but find it’s way slower than the other two browsers.

Does it work properly when you download .vlog or .vsav files from the
VASSAL site?

My guess is that GMail is recognizing the .vlog and .vsav files as
the wrong MIME type (application/zip). The long-term solution to this
problem is for us to get our MIME types registered with IANA:
